Publication History

Stars and Stripes published many editions over the decades, expanding and moving its coverage area in order to best serve its audience: U.S. service members.

Over the course of World War II, the paper published more than 30 different editions, covering and serving various fronts, from Casablanca to London, from Nancy to Berlin. Stars and Stripes has published continuously in Europe since 1942.

During the course of World War II, many editions changed names during their publishing history, and several different editions titled Mediterranean were published simultaneously, even though they were separate editions, distributed in different parts of the Mediterranean and North African theaters of operation.

The Pacific edition covered an even greater area and the number of editions varied widely over the years. Editions came, went and changed distribution area many times since Stars and Stripes began publication in that region in 1945

When mail subscriptions became available for the Pacific Stars and Stripes, the distribution network grew even wider, with the paper being delivered to such far-flung places as Nepal and Australia.

What follows is an attempt to map the various editions by date and the areas covered. This information comes from research of the actual newspapers, as well as administrative and circulation documents.

Stars and Stripes by no means claims the list is complete. If the territory where you were stationed is not listed below, but you do remember reading our paper, please check the edition that covers the territory nearest to it. Please note that the delivery areas mentioned do not cover regions to which copies might have been mailed.

The name that appears in parentheses is the name used in the Stars and Stripes digital archive.

Please note that there may be some gaps and omissions in this online archive. Any missing date or page that you discover is physically missing from the archive itself. If you have that issue of the paper in your possession, please contact us. Stars and Stripes would gladly scan it and add it to the archive for the benefit of our readers.

Please also note that the quality of the scanned pages may vary. In nearly all cases even the poorer quality pages will be legible, even if the quality is not sufficient to produce accurate electronic search results.
