European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - January 26, 1945, Darmstadt, Hesse Yank the army weekly 1945 mail Call i i ill of Bill of rights dear yank one of the provisions of the misnamed i Bill of rights says that if any adjusted compensation War service Bonus is authorized in the benefits paid under the i Bill of rights Are to be deducted from i believe that a Large percentage of men in the armed forces will never get a Nickels Worth of Bene fits from the i Bill of North Camp Russel Warren dear yank under the i Bill of rights As it now Only those few gis who were 25 years of age or or in at the time of their entry into the army can Benefit by it the educational benefits of this Bill May sound but they dont mean a thing to the Many gis who were Over 25 and not in school when gis Over 25 can get at least one year of free should they be denied the right of an education because they were born too or because the War started too late Many including have become aware of talents and ambitions which had been unknown to them before they were initiated into this Many of these when they were were 25 years of age and not in sch6ol because of no fault of their when such Meo return they Are going to want to develop that Talent or ambition through since experience is a slow i am afraid the i who enters at 25 or spends five or seven years in the army and then has to go Home and learn the slow Way May not be Able to make he lives to be 100 years Why not give him a break Hes still capable of learning and having even when Hes 31 or James Quarles Belgium dear yank there has been much comment on the i Bill of but can anyone Tell me one thing that is offered to the Man who has been in service before the War and would like to remain in after the War he is not eligible for mustering out cannot Bor Row Money to Purchase a Home or business and has no educational everyone knows that a Large military and naval Force must be maintained in though a Man remains in the military Many would like to own their own these men who were in service before the War and Are making the army or Navy their career were the Backbone of our armed without them this Large army and Navy of ours could not have been trained and prepared to defeat our yet not one thing is being done for them if they choose to remain in Why son to usic dear yank Many servicemen Are frankly afraid of postwar Appl Selling and other manifestations of business depression and mass we see no reason for waiting until the wars end to ask ques when peace comes on the will there be peace for the returning Serviceman will he have the peace of a of a living of Security Congress has answered with a i Bill of what does the i Bill of rights do for us under it the Veteran can 1 resume his he was under 25 at time of his entry into service and can live on a month 2 get a loan of at 4percent from a private to buy a House or a farm or to go into the banker thinks he is a Good risk 3 get a maximum of per week for up to 52 weeks within a two year he is unemployed through no fault of his Many of us think the i Bill we want it amended to include j Long interest free Loans to veterans to Aid us on our return to civilian life 2 tree and adequate Aid to All veterans to Complete their or reeducation in new Fields 3 adequate unemployment insurance until reemployed 4 costo living pensions to disabled veterans and to dependents of those who have Given their in this son John Lee Domurad sic German civilians dear yank Why Are German civilians allowed to remain in and behind the front lines in German territory what master mind has decided that they Are Only the harmless unfortunates of War Arent they All Poten tial spies and underground workers for the father land Why Arent they driven from their Homes As the people of Belgium and Holland and made to clog the roads of the German military machine How Many of them Are German soldiers who slipped through the lines to kill americans and gain information to take Back to the nazi gangsters in Germany you fight on four not just children will walk up and ask you for a and shoot you in the one Soldier was shot in such a Way they can see every every and when we Are on guard even Here in the rear we feel the eyes of these Freedom haters on our god pity the infantry with the so called Friendly civilians watching him in his Muddy foxhole from the win Dows of their he left his Home to abolish this slave driving master Are they to be abolished or Moll coddled Why should they be left in the Beautiful Sanctity of their Homes to spy and direct activities against us let us keep these people ahead of and to the Center of the country they let them stay be Hind their mighty wehrmacht and go to their be loved fuehrer for clothing and Germany Field artillery Battaion wac diet dear yank in reply to Jessica Wilsons letter complain ing that the was dont have a Well balanced if she wants a Well balanced meal Send her to you can balance a whole meal sometimes on the smooth Side of your mess China Chester Rune fair play dear yank although i am an i dont like to see enlisted men treated our commanding officer established a leave system for gis consisting of a made up by which assigns a definite Date to each Man for his leave if said Man is unable to take his leave at such he forfeits same and his name is put at the Bottom of the some men have had to for Feit their leaves because of financial difficulties and other cant something be done about this withheld rear echelons dear yank we Are becoming increasingly aware of the bitter Ness and antagonistic attitude displayed by the infantry and other frontline troops to the men who serve in the rear Echelon we Are fully aware of the hardships and intense discomforts endured while at the and we have the utmost respect and admiration for the Joes who actually slug it out with but these Guys should Stop and realize that without the air corps to soften Knock out otherwise inaccessible machine gun keep the Luftwaffe at Bay and perform other invaluable their tasks would be rendered a thousand fold More grinding and from then on it is Only logical to perceive the absolute necessity of excellent service personnel for these our outfit particularly keeps them Fly ing when we repair their Fla torn and Bullet riddled without Good close air and ground teamwork would be virtually Italy John signed by Johnny dutch Bonus dear yank i would like to know the facts regarding the dutch government paying a Bonus amounting to 32 percent to gis serving in dutch territory while it was considered a combat does this mean 32 percent of base pay or base plus overseas and is it pay Able to Allied soldiers who Are operating on any dutch soil within the Southwest Pacific area Australia Manuel the extra Money is not a Bonus at nor is it paid by the dutch it is a readjust ment of the monetary Exchange Between the american Dollar and the Netherlands East indies in january 1943 the office of chief of finance established the Netherlands East indies Guilder to be Worth in april 1944 it was readjusted to be Worth the servicemen who got paid in Nei Money from the time he entered dutch territory until he left the if it was prior to june is due to collect 13 cents extra for each Guilder he got Over the pay table in the lieutenant sees red dear yank after Reading 2d Fred Crismann letter headed the lieutenant sees i didst see but i saw which has the same effect on the lieutenant is sadly misinformed when he says that the enlisted Man gets 15 Days travelling live on the West coast and am stationed in the deep Miles from and All i can get is 15 Days with no travelling As for flying surely the lieutenant has a lot better Chance with his wings than the poor i with his As for that business about a second lieutenant putting a i on up twice in six Ive yet to meet Camp James Homer dear yank As to the lieutenants statement that its gis like us who make lbs put of officers like for the lieutenants information and edification an so by not no pm 6r group of pm Ever made an officer an an officer is one or int because he wants to be or Doest want to As for his hard earned bars and he volunteered to earn nobody had to twist his Arm to make him go to in four years the Good officers Ive come in Contact with have readily admitted that their oct was a Breeze compared with the hard work they must put in living up to the commission they have freely Treyve been too Busy and too sensible to be bothered by but then it takes All kinds of want to add my Gripe about officers accrued finer things of Lite dear yank while overseas i read How the boys were treated when they got Back in the it sure is of so just this afternoon we were entertained by some Beautiful babes who flew Here from we Here at the hos Pital think it is some of us have been in the army too Long to appreciate the finer things of such As clean sheets and fancy it is just too much for me and any i who has seen combat for four or five Ive been Here in the Hospital for Over two maybe i just aint used to this lonesome perhaps you can suggest i am a combat Engineer with almost four years Knochleman Kennedy leave my buddies who have been on Makin and who have already served three years Over seas without certainly deserve some compensation for the furlough time Treyve their officers will get it Why wont they if the lieutenant is desirous of securing More time at less expense to visit the West if his visits there Are More important than his then he can Avail himself of the privilege of resigning his com becoming a lowly i and then getting 15day travel time he obviously resents others Camp son Luis Pearson Graham dear yank we have Many Fellows right Here at our own base who have never seen Home since they came into the army nearly three years and this int the Only base like that the Only furlough they Ever got was 21 Days to one of these so called Tropi Cal we Fellows Down Here really take pity on that poor second and we Hope he gets moved to a base much nearer Home so he wont have to spend so much of his hard earned pay to get he cant think very much about Home if he bitches about spending Money first to get dutch Guiana Beys off Suriname ration allowances dear yank can an enlisted Man on detached service be obliged to pay for his own meals i have been under the apparently erroneous impression that at All times the army supplied this necessary perquisite to its recently i returned to my overseas station after a Brief furlough which started and terminated at fort when travel orders were issued at that they provided for group meal which would be charged against my subsequent and then a ration allowance would be credited for the since the meal tickets Are per meal and the ration allowance is 65 cents per obviously the net Cost has been per Day for me and others likewise the furlough was so Welcome that this Cost for Only three Days is As is the fact that a ration allow Ance does not compensate for other meals i necessarily purchased before my furlough like i am not quibbling Over paying for two of the above mentioned meal tickets issued but turned in i merely question the legality of being charged for this Alaska Donald l Twitchell 20year retirement dear yank if i May Call you everyone who has been inducted under the selective service act of 1940 has a problem on his mind discharge and the postwar the other Small percentage of our armed also have but its definitely not a its a Bill that will retire the Ameri can at the end of 20 years instead of Are we any different from the Navy lets get on the beam and give the old army what it and if any of our dear readers have any caustic remarks about the old inform them that they can be saved for a later f l Atad coot by 14
