   European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - April 10, 1948, Darmstadt, Hesse                                I Ellen fair is employed As com anio7i-sccrctary to Olivia Arnold wealthy Young heiress. The Arnolds have been getting threatening kid Nap letters from a revengeful suitor of mrs. Arnold a Rolph Laramie and have therefore hired Leo Ham mond a Young detective to guard Olivia s safety. Leo is suspicious of Ellen s Friend Stan Robinson think ing he is probably a Fortune Hunter making a play for Olivia. About the same time that mrs. Arnold receives another threatening note saying Laramie is ready to act Stan accepts a Job As Pilot for wealthy night club owner Sidney Tark Tjho also seems to be interested in Olivia. T part in after they got Home in the big Arnold House Olivia came int Ellen s room As she was preparing for  want to serve notice on you Ellen Olivia said. From now on Stanis mine and i want you to keep  i m glad you like him Ellen commented but i want you to know intend to continue seeing him just the same As usual. This is one time at least when you won t get what you want by merely nodding your head. But there s no reason Why we can t still go on being friends is there of course not. And i like you for speaking up. So from now on it s every girl for herself. Right that s All right with me f Ellen  walked toward her own room and then stopped in the doorway. And i Promise i wont wave the family Money or take any other unfair advantage she  she was ready for bed Ellen suddenly remembered that she had left her compact in the Side pocket of her coat and went to the clothes closet to get  in her hand she found not Only the compact but a folded , she smoothed it out and found it was a note that had been scribbled on a carnival  tr-2600 tomorrow at noon if you want to know something about Stan Robinson the note read. It was unsigned and had been written with a  read it Over again several times wondering who had put it in her pocket and what the motive was. The More she pondered the More confused she became As to its meaning. For a moment she thought of going to Leo s office to discuss the note with him but she was too tired. When Ellen got to bed How Ever she found herself unable to  she frankly admitted to herself she had been jealous of Stan s attention to Olivia she was forced honestly to admit that Olivia had been the aggressor. The girl had herself confirmed Stan s protest that she had been the pursuer not he. So on the face of it Stan is everything he said he was. The More she wrestled with the problem the More convinced she became that Stan was entirely honest. If Only this note had t been slipped into her pocket she would have no further doubts about him. But there was the note and she meant to get to the Bottom of it. With that decision made she finally went 1osleep, and it was t until ten o clock next morning that she went Down to see Leo. Weekend april 10, 1948 Tark s eyes narrowed to slits in his Pudgy face As he glared at the Young Man at his Side you would t dare he said. She went directly to Leo s downtown office but the detective had t been there yet. He should be in most any minute miss fair if you d care to wait his Secretary said. I Don t know where he is or i d try to reach him on the  looked Over several magazines and soon discovered it was nearly  had t appeared yet nor had he called so she went downstairs and into Public Telephone Booth and dialled the number that had been written on the carnival club  this tr-2600?" she asked when a Man s voice  is the Acme drugstore was the answer and Ellen Hung  have dialled the wrong num Ber she told herself and dropping an other Nickel rang tr-2600  time a feminine voice answered. This is Ellen fair she said. I was told to Call this number at noon to Day about a or. Robinson. I wonder if this is the Correct number yes the husky voice answered. I m the person who slipped the note in your coat pocket at the carnival club last night. I saw you and the Way Stan was standing you  but Why be so mysterious about it Ellen demanded. Can t i meet you some place where we can talk things Over face to face if you have something to Tell me i Don t care about meeting you the girl answered. I just want you to know that Stan is no Good. Of he acts like a gentleman and probably will Tell you some very fancy stories but i like your looks you seem like a Good kid and i Don t want you to get Hurt some time if you go out with him again ask him about Darlene and see How he takes  before Ellen could ask her anything else the phone clicked in her errand the connection was broken. She Felt it would be a waste of time to callback. Instead she let the Booth and looked up the address of the Acme drugstore then went to the Street and hailed a  gave the Driver the address and asked him to please hurry. It was a matter of Only five minutes before Theca swung up in front of the drugstore. There were three phone Booths at one Side of the store All of them occupied and two men waiting turns. A glance into the Booths revealed that they All were occupied by men so she turned to look about the  girls were at the soda foun Tain having their lunch and Ellen was stumped. She could t go to each of Shemto ask if her name was Darlene. She debated for a moment what to do and then turned to the woman behind the Cigar counter who served As the store  had a phone Call from one of the Booths Here a few minutes ago she told the woman. I was talking to a girl Idon t know and the connection was broken. I tried to Call Back but the lines were Busy so i dashed Over Here to Serif i could find her. I wonder if you happened to notice a girl using one of the pay phones in the last few minutes the woman thought for a moment. I kind of keep an Eye on the Booths she said because we be had continued on Page 22 19
