With their deeds gone and past the assemblage on these onetime murderess Esin an old Castle outside of Paris should Best be thought of As society s Earnest attempt at rehabilitation. Pazen himself admits to experiencing mis Givings at the Start of the assignment but once on the Job he found his subjects As easy to handle As the chorus line at the bal Tamarin. The latter is Pazen yardstick so to speak for during his Resi Dence in Paris the past few years he has probably had More nightclub assignments than any other photographer working in the City of Light and flashbulbs. Slightly jealous fellow workers used to insist it took Joe a week of transition to Orient his living to daytime assignments. C. W. Trooper White author of the rather glum report on Muncie Indiana s current Outlook toward world affairs those United states Page 4 is a Veteran of Midwest journalism the Canadian armoured corps and the United states army. According to All published and unpublished accounts he is also the Veteran of More escapades involving wartime stars and stripes staff members than any other individual and is regarded As the Dean of stripes alumni. This distinction was acknowledged by the army at the end of the Eto War in choosing him As the first stripes Man to be redeployed. It is perhaps unfair to one of the greats of the photographic world a Man who has been around As Long As the picture Magazine that his first appearance in weekend offers Only a limited insight into his work. On the other hand it is typical of Alfred Eisenstaedt s curiosity that a fashion de signer s provocative description of a Petticoat with frills and fur Belows pretty petticoats Page in would have alerted him to the possibilities of what May be an important Mode of our times. For Eisen staedt s accumulative work in the past ten years i almost Broad enough in scope to provide anyone s time capsule with comprehensive pictorial documentation of the period. Students of the picture Maga Zine will doubtlessly recall the great number of such significant pictures credited to Eisenstaedt but a few will hold that the picture which Best describe the Eisenstaedt touch is his photographic duplication of the famous cartoon showing a pair of ski track straddling a tree. Weekend s cover photographed by Edouar Drenner shows a segment of the highly civilian Zed and beautified editorial staff of the current Sta Sand stripes. The least soldierly element at Type writer Center wearing Long Brown hair and Nice smile is reporter rewrite woman Reyburn Pollock. Seated about the rim of the Day copy desk behind her Are a tech sergeant and two sex captains left to right Victor b. Sanford Norbert Ehrenfreund an Nathan j. Margoli indicating that the military has not surrendered its stake in the Soldier s rare old tintype below exhumed from the floorboards of an abandoned building in Pung Stadt s Low rent District shows the somewhat More soldierly copy desk of the stripes of Ungstad editions it looked in Early 1946. In these two pictures is compressed the postwar history of the i s break fast table daily which celebrates its sixth birthday on the 18th of this month see Page 6. The pictures also present the recent personal history of or. Mar Golin who appears in the earlier photograph third from left wearing the uniform and barely discernible insignia of a Captain a position fro which he has since elevated himself As this week s cover reveals. Letters to the editor year round resort sir i have just come across the copy of weekend with the Story about our tiny Swiss resort Davos looks Forward backward february 28. You certainly wrote about some of interest ing legends that Are still alive Here in Davos. I have taken the Liberty of showing the Story to some of the people whom you mentioned in the Story Andas a result my copy of the Magazine is thumb marked so that the Story itself is now almost illegible. Incidentally although you did Good Job of telling about Davos As a Winter resort you overlooked completely the fact that it is also a popular summer resort. There is a Good Deal More activity Here in Davos than there is in Many of the other popular resort sin the Grisons during the summer. The reason for this is primarily i think be cause we have facilities for Tennis Golf swimming horseback Riding and for Mountain climbing in addition to our Many sanitarium which Are open the year round. Also one of the More popu Lar informal activities during the summer is the car excursions through the valleys in and around Davos. A you May know Many americans have visited us in summer and Winter. Please Don t let me give you the wrong impression i enjoyed your article. M. Albrecht Davos Switzerland Benes. Over comics sir the series of articles by Eduard Benes March 13. To april 3 have proved very interesting. Allow me to congratulate you on the stories and for giving your readers credit for a Little sense and interest in affairs other than comics. John r. Wrigh Frankfurt Faith sir it certainly was a pleasure to see the Story on the easter food train sent by Sinsheim to Mannheim easter train in the april 3 Issue. I think the project on the part of this German county i admirable and one of the finest things being done today. It is encouraging to know that the German people Are trying help each other. It gives us a Little Faith in the future of this country. Barbara Bishop Munich nodding movie goer sir i have probably gone to fewer movie than anyone else in the occupation. The habit or Lack of the same did t develop Here in the dec. It is one which Iguess i must have developed As a result of having been born and raised in a Tow where it was a Good three mile walk to the Only movie result of All this is that my per Sonal movie attendance now totals about twice a year. As has been the Case As far Back As i can remember my few trips to the theater have coincided with the appearance of what the Trade Calls class films. At some times and in some places i have been Able to avoid this unfortunate coincidence by Reading reviews of the current movies in Advance of an proposed trip to the movie House. Here in the dec however the Best Way i can get Advance warning is through the weekend weekly movie review. Unfortunately your movie review has Given me a couple of rather uncomfortable evenings during the past year. Because weekend seems to dislike All the movies i find it hard to Tell just which Are the Good ones and which Are the bad ones admitting As you seem to that even the Best Are none too Good. My Only plea is for gosh Sakes please let your movie editor get some sleep so that he likes afew movies once in a while. If he does t i la have to continue nodding through two or three bad ones every Seidl Nurnberg
