And although they continue to draw their pay and allow ances they have practically no military duties while they Are in school. Kept Busy however if you think this leaves them lots of. Time for extra curricular affairs then you Haven t been keeping up with the latest in nuclear affairs and some of  officer Are doing just that. Some Are doing More than just keeping up. Some Are leading their classes. Or. A. B. Butts civilian educational adviser for the army said one officer at the engineering school of the Cali fornia Institute of technology led his class of 21. The armed forces have Learned a number of Les sons from the last two wars and among those lessons is the fad that War is now a specialist s Job. More than 100 of the officers Are studying aeronautical engineering. More than 200 Are enrolled in business administration courses. Others Are studying chemistry civil engineering and meteorology. Three Hundred Are studying guided missiles Auto motive engineering physics International relation and Public. Administration. The medical department has the largest quota of officers at schools and its trainees Are Tak ing advanced work in Medicine sanitation and Allied Fields. The military intelligence division has 28 officers studying unusual languages and the areas where they Are used. The personnel and administration division has 35 officers in advanced courses in personnel management and the troop information and education division has seven officers doing specialized work in adult Educa Tion audio visual aids discussion techniques social psychology journalism and political science. 1920 plan expanded most of the student officer Are taking graduate courses and the courses Range up to two years m length. In general officers up to 32 years of age Are. Accepted for undergraduate work 37 for work leading to a master s degree and the age limit is 42 for those seeking a doctor s degree. The services of course have their own schools and the officers Are m civilian schools Only because there in t enough room at the service schools or because the service schools Don t give the required courses. The civilian program is an expanded version of a plan the army adopted in 1920. The National defense act. Of that year authorized the War department to detail up to 2 per cent of its regular officer strength of r specialised training in civilian institutions. In 1943, the 2 per cent limitation was suspended by con Gress and the figure raised to s per cent. Legislation has been proposed to lift the 2 per cent quota indefinitely. Pm included incidentally amendments to the act. Set up a similar program for enlisted men and some enlisted men Are now taking courses also. These however Are mainly in Industrial schools. Applicants for such educational training must be volunteers and Are chosen on the basis of tests or examination of past academic records. The officers Myiow a Good Deal when they see it and com petition is pretty keen. There were More than 900 applicants for a recent quota of 107 officers. The services Are making cer Tain they will get the Benefit of this training. Although Reserve officers Are taking part in the program plans for the future indicate Only regular officers will be considered.
