All of us wondered what our Fate would be none dared guess. Two Days later we were on a three Day forced March Over Muddy roads in cold Damp weather. At a dismal Railroad siding we were herded into Box cars like so Many head of cattle for our trip to the soviet Union. There were 40 women in my car. For 18 Days we received one meal daily moldy foul smelling bread and watery soup. The russian guards would beat us if we so much As asked for water. The stench in Side the car was unbearable. Moat of us suffered from dysentery. When we arrived in the ural mountains 197 had died of starvation and exposure during the journey. Our group was led to the City of capias where we were imprisoned in a barbed wire enclosure. I and 99 other women were quartered in a room 20 by 12 feet. We slept on wooden Beds without blankets. There must have been about 1,300 women and 400 men All told in the enclosure. Three times a Day we were fed the same meal of sour soup and stale bread for breakfast dinner and supper. This was barely sufficient to keep us Strong enough for our work leveling land and laying Railroad tracks. We worked seven Days a week from 5 am until 7 pm with a five minute rest every two hours. Deatha almost daily there were deaths from starvation and beatings almost daily. The dead and dying were removed to a tent and were later thrown into common Graves dug by German prisoners of War. I personally saw men buried alive. Once four male prisoners tried to escape. Two of them were shot and killed the other two beaten beyond recognition. Among the women there was never any thought of escape. None of us could speak russian and the Prospect of the Long trip Back to Germany seemed insurmountable. One Day a russian army officer came to our Barracks and told us that 200 of our number including myself had been selected for repatriation to Germany. It sounded too Good to be True.
