Red youth Siberia yet by Thomas p. Whitney a staff writer life is Short so let s not be fool Sand live it up while we can said an Anonymous letter to the Moscow news paper Komsomol pravda describing the feelings of one group of Young russians. We re going to grab from life All its pleasures and delights the soviet youth continued. Such Young people Are not very inter ested in politics particularly of the communist variety. Komsomol pravda condemned them and other Young people like them but the fact remains they represent views typical of a big Cross Section of russian Young people. They sure Are in love with the luxuries of life said a russian speaking american who became acquainted with Many of the Moiseyev dancers during their tour of the United states this year this is another aspect of the same mood. Komsomol pravda recently discovered in the siberian Metropolis of Novosibirsk a group of russian Young people who believe in Freedom of morals and who have established a club where they devote them selves solely to having a Good Lime usually with the assistance of Vodka. The soviet youths paper again was outraged at the existence of such Young people and their hostile attitudes toward the Stern and hardworking life prescribed for them by the communist party Are a frequent subject in the soviet humor Magazine particularly condemned in cartoons in this journal Are Young people who do not want to Migrate to Siberia or the far North to work under primitive conditions where the government sends them after they finish universities and institutes. Thus Kro Kodil pictures two girls sitting in Moscow on a Park Bench. One says again i be had bad Luck. This is my fifth husband who has been sent off to work in the another constant Kro Kodil subject is parents who use personal pull to get their children into higher educational institutions. One such published a Little while ago shows a Mother addressing a father while a girl stands in the background. The Mother says to the father it s about time you discussed with daughter which Institute you re going to gel her admitted to this the obvious Point was that she had flunked out of several previously. Spoiled children whose parents pamper their every wish and who take full advantage of the situation Young men and women imitating Western fashions an contemptuously indifferent to communist ideas youths whose Only desire is to dance to Western rhythms hour after hour boys and girls who run away from the construction projects to which they Are sent in the soviet East and North All of these Are the More or less permanent subject matter of a Stream of editorials cartoons and More Active measures taken by the soviet communist party. Whether in Black or White color still or motion pictures the races offered every Opportunity for Marine photography at its Best. Every aspect of the race was covered in minute detail. Many of the photographers took chartered planes to make Early pictures of the Start. Others flew in Navy blimps. In All cases the Aerial photographers were obliged to Fly not lower than 1,500 feet. This meant using telephoto lenses in order to get images Large enough to make first Quality prints. Some of the photographers used Speed graphics with lenses of12-Inch and 15-Inch focal lengths. Others used Fri Inchild Aeria cameras and 85mm cameras with lenses As Long As Stomm s. Because of the. Lop sided superiority of the american yacht the Columbia Over its Liritis rival sceptre the Early pictures were the Only ones in which both sleek hulled Craft could be recorded in one negative. I was assigned to a coast guard 95-Fooler along with the other still movie and Magazine photographers. The major problem we encountered was the one of distance and motion. Every photographer automatically placed a yellow k2 or g or red filter Over his Lens. This gave a darkened sky causing the Brilliant White sails to stand out in Sharp contrast against the horizon. The while capped water also went several shades Darker. Telephoto lenses were a necessity. I found my Hexagon singletons reflex with a g filtered 300mm Kilfitt telephoto Lens Ideal for average distances from our boat to the yachts As they made turns at Marker buoys. At the finish our boat came close enough to theline to allow me to use a 135mm telephoto Lens on my Leica m3. Shutter speeds of l/1000th of a second were necessary to avoid camera motion on the pitching deck of the 95-footer. I settled on the new High Speed plus a pan film As the Ideal emulsion for this assignment. Its Fine Grain medium contrast and relatively High Speed left nothing to be desired. The chief Hazard on this Type of assignment was the constant exposure to Salt water Spray. Salt water and cameras just Don t mix and Many hours were spent removing the corrosive residue from cameras and lenses. Hold it one More please is no joke with press an professional photographers. There Are Many reasons particularly when shooting Flash Why one More please makes sense and Good insurance. When things break fast or a Good picture Opportunity pops up suddenly the Veteran photographer shoots even if he s not fully ready. He carries his camera with a bulb in the reflector focus set at 10 or 15 feet shutter at l/200th of a second aperture about f/11, and film in place. He s ready to shoot in a split second and does. Then he May take another Backstop picture changing focus and aperture to fit the subject if there s time. After making their first insurance pictures most photog Raphers will take a second photo that one More please to improve on it. They May use a different Angle move the subjects around or change the lighting plan perhaps making a straight Flash and then a bounced Flash. It s impossible to see exactly How your subjects look during the fractional second of exposure. There Are spoilers that simply can t be seen or prevented. It s foolish to Gamble everything on one exposure. This applies particularly to pictures of people. V one spoiler is the blinking Eye. Catch it Halfway and you subject looks sleepy and a bit a photogenic. Catch a full blink Ami the subject will look sound asleep. Other spoilers Are reflections on eyeglasses and Frozen expressions. Photo subjects usually loosen up for one More after the main ordeal is Over. Goren on Bridge weekly Bridge quiz q. 1 As South you hold 4qj93 ?5 kq105 4kaj109 your partner opens with one Spade.
