The follow ing Day would he his 20th birthday. The youth was a/1c John e. Noonan and his feelings about turning 20 prompted poem his first contribution to Pup tent poets in the stars and stripes. This Little bit of encouragement was the thing that started me off Noonan says. Since then Noonan now a staff sergeant in the personnel Section of nato s 6th Nataf in Izmir Turkey has submitted More than 350 poems of which some 250 have been printed in Pup tent poets. Some were sarcastic attempts to get even with people who ridiculed my efforts Noonan recalls. And some were prompted by personal discontent but most of the poems and prose i have written Are expressions of my  a tour to the ancient cities near Izmir Noonan met his wife Ismet a Turk ish girl preparing for examinations at the american girls College in Izmir. They were married in october 1954 the air Man wrote a poem about their honeymoon which ended with the line All we need is the  daughter watches As Noonan writes Noonan s enlistment ended in March 1956 and the couple returned to his Home town Somerville mass. Later he studied literature at the University of California at los Angeles. Late in 1957 Noonan reenlisted and re Quested Turkey. Today the noon ans and their two children Cevat three and Joanne cookie two live in an apartment overlooking the Beautiful Bay of  Noonan is off duty the family visit Many of the ancient ruins near Izmir sometimes accompanied by Noonan s father in Law one of the Foremost literary Fig ures in Turkey. Noonan devotes much of his time to literary studies and poetry inspired by his surroundings or the antics of the children. One poem published in Pup tent poets was signed by Cevat and poked fun at his pops writing claiming the family was totally neglected when the paper arrived. Another was inspired by a minaret see from their Balcony. Still another concerned his daughter s persistence in trying to get his attention while he wrote. Noonan won $50 in a Short Story contest. He has submitted 50 of his poems to a pub Lisher much of his writing is for two columns noontime by Noonan and bretts briefs in Turkey topics unit paper. Noonan went to the now defunct land Haven school for progressive students near Boston on a scholarship. We were called the school on wheels he said. Whenever there was something of interest going on we attended. Some times we went to Washington b.c., to hear a debate or see a Parade in Honor Ofa dignitary and sometimes we went to a foreign country to study local politics or  Noonan s class visited Europe terminating a tour of the continent with a visit to Yugoslavia including an audience with marshal Tito. Noonan was then 16. I have always been interested in literary history and mythology Noonan said. Now that i am stationed in Turkey i find these subjects even More interesting.
