Pacific Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - February 22, 1959, Tokyo, Japan A i tour to i Hamburg am toil to Man move. Cities of Germany by Ernie Weatherall staff writer during the postwar years Westerlin has risen from ruin an rubble to become the show window of the free world 110 Miles behind the Iron curtain. Evidence of the City s rebirth can be Scon everywhere the modern Glass an Chrome trimmed office buildings the spacious new housing developments an new architectural landmarks such As con Gress Hall and the Ford foundation endowed buildings at the free University. Rail More impressive than the buildings is the attitude of the berliners them selves. When Berlin is in the news Visi tors Are usually surprised to find the inhabitants apparently indifferent to the current tension. It is not indifference however but the berliners acceptance of the fact that they have to live on a Lance Loc cd Island. Before the War Berlin was a Cosmo Politan City whose citizens regarded All other germans As provincials. This Atti tude is ill prevails possibly even More so since. Berliners Are not permitted to Ven Ture beyond their City limits. So they have turned their beleaguered City into a Little world of their own. Berliners do get a feeling of confine ment during the hot summer Long to break out of their Concrete Jungles and spend the Day in Cool Pine forests and lakes in the surrounding country. Instead they crowd every Blade of grass in the City s Park and sit almost shoulder to shoulder at their Lakeside Seaside resorts and camping areas Suchias wan see and Skladow. Except for the Lack of hinterland Westerlin has just about everything that Lon Don Paris or new York can offer opera theater concerts and fairs exhibiting almost everything under the Sun. There is always a fair going on in the Cluster of exhibition Halls around the Funk urm Berlin s Eiffel West Berlin comes to life at night an there is a concentration of Neon lights around the Kurfuerst Tendam. Near this Roadway of the divided City is the state opera the famous Schiller theater an the unique political cabaret die Stuchel Schweinle the porcupines where Berlin ers laugh at their political situation. Like on the champs Elysee of Paris sidewalk cafes line the Kurfuerst Tendam. Even in Winter the cafe patrons Retreat Only when the infrared Heaters in the Glass screened outdoor cafes cannot com Pete with the cold winds blowing Dow from the russian Steppes. The scars of War Are slowly Healing in West Berlin. Stateside movie makers Are even having trouble finding a bomb gutted building to shoot their postwar rubble pictures. In areas like the potsdamer Platz where the american British and russian sectors meet there has been no rebuilding. But most War ruins have been levelled and the old foundations filled in. One ruin which May remain like the ancient castles on the Rhine is the Kaiser Wilhelm memorial Church on the Kuer fuels Tendam unloved architecturally until All but the Tower was destroyed the West Berlin is at its brightest during the annual film festival. The Brandenburg Gate on the East West Border line. Landlocked Island Church has become Berlin s favorite hollow Shell of the Reich Stag build ing which was destroyed by nazi arson in1933 and further damaged by the War is slowly being restored. It has become Symbol of Hope for berliners who have Faith that it once More will be the meet ing place of the German government. One of the most devastated sections Oberlin the Hansa District now is the site of a new housing project designed by20 top International architects. The development which has become a show place of the City includes schools a shop Ping Center a Library theater and two churches. Near the tier Garte in whose War damaged Trees were Cut Down for Fiu l and whose Marble statues were crushed by bombs has now been reforested. Most of the headless statues have disappeared and most berliners Are glad. They claimed it made the Park look too much like cemetery. Like new York City West. Berlin is made up of Many boroughs. Neu Kolln wedding Kreuzberg and Tempelhof the most populated Are the working Man a neighbourhoods. Most of the wage earners Are employed in West Berlin s main industries print ing garment making and electrical equip ment. After the War restoring the econ omy of the City was Given top Marshall plan funds counter part Loans and Grants from the West Ger Man government new factories were built or War ravaged ones rehabilitated. Although West Berlin has an air of Prosperity it. Depends on West Germany for financial support. Once the City As the Crossroads of Trade Between Eastern and Western Europe. Now shut off from its natural trading area it can St la Only to West Germany. An economic Shadow which hangs Over the City is the threat of a blockade. Remembering when the soviets tried to starve the City to surrender in 1948, Westerlin has built a tremendous stockpile of supplies which is expected to last Well Over seven months. However berliners have Confidence in the future and do no dwell on the vulnerability of their City although they Are Well aware of it. No description of the City is Complete without a look at the East sector. By crossing a Street another world begins As different from West Berlin As blk is from White. The features Iho ponderous soviet memorial in the Garden of made from lie White Marble ruins of Hitler s chancellery the show Street of East Berlin Slali Allee with buildings that look like Moscow Gorky Street and the famous old Avenue of Imperial Berlin Unter Den Linden. In the communist capital of a satellite country propaganda posters hang from almost every building and there Are so Many people in uniform it resembles wartime City. In fact the Many crumbling ruins with rubble still untouched adds tothe illusion. Cover Page 9 photograph shows air lift memorial at Tempelhof dedicated to memory of airmen who lost lives during red blockade. Berliners own seashore enjoying Sunshine on wan see s Beach. An impressive example of the War battered City s rebirth. The Congress Hall at the tie Garten built with the Aid of american funds.
