Bag answer to Aletter on Cost of film in pcs was interesting and amusing. It bears out my observations of the past 2% years perfectly. In the . Koda Chrome can be purchased with an expiration Date of at least 12 15 months but i have yet to find pm Kodachrome dated More than eight months with the usual being three to five months. It appears the pm May be receiving film from Eastman which is too old to be sold to distributors or retailers in the . I have frequently found symptoms of deterioration in the pm film which results in transparencies being off color. If the annoyed Shutterbug wishes to assure himself of first Quality film i strongly recommend he Purchase from reliable stateside mail order firm or buy on the Economy. Neither of these sources has Ever produced off color results As mentioned above to my knowledge. Maj George c. Valentine editor s note the follow ing reply was received from the Usi. Army european Exchange system Kodak shipments at checked periodically by the buyer in new York and again in Europe. Recent checks show that Kodak shipments have an expiration Date of 12 to 15 months from the time they leave the factory. Taking into consideration the three to four months Supply time from new York to bus stores throughout Europe and the Neces sity for Large stocks film sales can never be predicted accurately because of changing weather condition bus film stocks Are still considerably below that age limit and he is bus policy always to reduce the Price of All film one month prior to the expiration Date while a customer will buy younger him at higher prices on the Economy As Long As the stamped age limit is valid there is no difference in film. The manufacturer sets a maximum age limit on films and leaves plenty of room for error exhaustive tests show that so Long As the film is within this limit it is unaffected. The manufacturers of All Colo films list heat humidity Light and retention of film after exposure As being More important factors than age in causing color distortion. This distortion is most prevalent when photographers leave packages of film in direct sunlight in hot automobiles or in warm rooms that Are either too dry or too wet one of the most important fac tors i color distortion is keeping exposed film for a Long time be fore processing. Once the film is exposed the Light factors which Are working on the film have a Chance to penetrate through the chemical layers which make up color Filoni. All of these factors can be borne by any reputable finishing Laboratory. For further details see Kodak data Book volume iii Section cip4, storage of enlistment Extension As an so sgt Aasc 30380.
