European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - July 23, 1959, Darmstadt, Hesse Or i to thursday july 23, 1959 the stars and stripes Page 2f i Hunting fishing a by Johnny Neumyer Safe net doubles titles won by Harum Powell Dozier Maxey dreaming up a safari maybe it will help your plan Ning if you talk to an air Force officer and sportsman who has had quite a bit of experience in Hunting the world s big game. Maj Marvin e. Grant personnel director for Alex whose account of an East Africa Hunt appeared april 10 in this column furnishes the following additional information in the. Hopes he could steer other . Forces sportsmen to Low Cost but productive and thrilling Marv belated thanks for the treatment of the recent article on my safari. I think to some extent you have generated an Awakening As to some of the possibilities for a lot of the military gang Over her who have always been scared away by the expenses involved in a trip of this kind. Actually i found while on this safari As is typical that a Lotof the so called luxuries of safari life Are not a bit necessary and that a number of Young White Hunters Are real eager to take out clients on their own with minimum equipment and actually getting into areas that would not be accessible if one were loaded Down wit huge safari trucks necessary to set up this luxurious Camp life. Fabulous9 trophies on Kenya especially some of the younger Hunters of which there Are a couple of americans who Are making a name for themselves Down there arid who Are ready to take you out on a three five or seven Day safari where one would be Able to Knock off a certain amount of Plains game and if one did want to make this trip there Are fabulous trophies right on the slopes of mount Kenya and in a couple of Days time one could be certain of a Cape Buffalo Steinbok Dik Dik water Buck and Leopard. This area would be one of the controlled blocks and if a i or a civilian who had leave time could work his Way Clown As far As Khartoum on one of the regular military flights he could take ethiopian airlines South from there and have himself fabulous five Day Hunt for around $400. This does not include airline costs. However this $400 would include All salaries jeep White Hunter Camp Cook Skinner and gun bearer. If i get the Chance to make another one this is the Way i am going. If you find anybody who is interested in this Type of arrange ment you could drop me a line As there Are two Young White Hunters Omi who was my Hunter and a Young rancher Down there who Hunts artime who if Given sufficient Advance notice to Book a Hunt in a controlled area would arrange these Short trips for sportsmen Whoso. Not have the Cash to make a Large outlay for a lengthy safari. Game is diminishing in this area it is True but there Are still a Heads and while during the Rainy season one docs have the game spread around in the dry season and 011 the game trails on can find plenty of Good animals to bag. Hunters know hidden9 spots one of the interesting sidelights that you find out once you become friends with these White Hunters is the fact that your larger con trolled safari enterprises attempt to minimize those areas that Are difficult to get to by virtue of the fact that the typical client is Nota Young Man but of Middle age in most instances and is not really in shape for a rugged Hunt. That is Why i found out most White Hunters have favorite areas buried away in rugged terrain which takes some doing to get to but believe me there Are some fabulous trophies left in these places. While on a Buffalo Hunt we glassed a Rhino whose horns my White Hunter estimated to be 28 to 32 inches Long and the Only reason we did t stalk this old boy was because i did thave a Rhino License. We had crawled through Jungle Vine and Bamboo Forest for an hour before arriving at this hidden spot. I Wasin pretty Good physical shape at the end of the safari and after taking this particular trek i could see Why some White Hunters would be very reluctant to take older clients into an area like this because of possible complications like heart trouble Etc. Another reason i that Only the boys who grew up in this area and who have hunted there All their lives will go into these dangerous areas. A rough estimate Given by my White Hunter Henry Pool Man was that of the 75 or 80 registered White Hunters in the East Africa White Hunters assn., there Are less than 15 who would actually tackle som of these Bamboo forests on the Kenya slopes. But since this area was the hideout of the Man Man during the recent uprising some of the Hunters who were employed As scouts for the British forces became very familiar with this area and reports came out of rhinos Buffalo and elephant with fabulous tusks and again thanks and if you know of anyone who is interested of these Hunts let me know and i will be More than glad to Tell him what i maj Marvin e.
