Residents of Erl Isheim got in touch with the Protection of Birds station in ludwigs Burg which decided that the problem of feeding the Young storks could be solved with a sort of lift. The station built a fish ing Rod affair to function something like this. A wheel was placed at the handle of a Stout pole something like a fishing reel. Near the tip is another wheel. Their main purpose to provide Low Cost service for both High compression and regular engines in today s motorcars. The gasoline which is finally consumed in the Motorist s vehicle has travelled along and arduous journey involving a com plex distribution system stretching thou Sands of Miles from the Oil Fields to the refineries thence aboard Mats and Commer Cial tankers to the ports harbours and River terminals of Western Europe. Most of these tests we Call physical rather than Chemi Cal that is we test them in specially built machines and under Laboratory controlled temperatures corresponding with the sex by Jack Walters staff writer act conditions under which they Are actually the two major occupational hazards in the lab Are fire and Lead poisoning. All personnel employed there Are medically examined every six months. The station is staffed by one officer Heisey nine pm technicians and 14 German employees. Number one Mission of the lab is Tocheck the Quality of aviation fuel particularly Jet fuel. Special instrument used in general testing Are refrigeration units for simulating stratospheric temperatures a device for determining the Lead Content in gasoline and Knock engines for rating the octane Quality of gasoline. In France Heisey explained the octane is controlled by the government specifying 90 to be retailed As a so called super Ca Burant. In Germany the octane number is controlled by commercial com petition. Recent boosts in octane number by German refineries reveal a 92 to 95 octane gasoline As the Premium Grade. Pm gasoline octane in Germany is about 91, or an average of stateside regular. This fuel can be used by older cars re Quiring a less powerful Gas and also in the High compression engines of later models. Some High compression engines of course should be adjusted in order to prevent the Ping or knocking noise. Our problem in this respect Heisey continued is to satisfy the greatest num Ber of users of pm Gas at minimum Cost the consumer can be assured of one thing he s receiving the Best possible Gas for the Price he s paying about half what he d Back Home. Our policy is the Best fuel for the greatest number at the lowest Price " Page 12 the stars and stripes checking one of the Knock machines that determines octane rating Friday 4mly 24, 1959 the stars and stripes Page 13
