This would mean sharply reduced annual allocations of fed eral funds to the states. Rejecting administration de mands for an increase in the fed eral gasoline tax the committee proposed that a current financial emergency be met in this fashion 1issue up to $1 billion of High Way Revenue Bonds. 2extend the program four years beyond the present 1972 termination Date. Would Cut Aid this plan if approved by con Gress would slash scheduled High Way building allocations to the states from $2.5 billion to $600 Mil lion in the 1961 fiscal year starting next july 1. Allocations for ensuing years would be Cut sharply below the present schedule. The Federal government sup plies 90" per cent of funds for construction of the interstate system. The Eisenhower administration has opposed issuance of special Highway Bonds contending this would create inflationary pressures and interfere with sales of other government securities.
