European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - August 4, 1959, Darmstadt, Hesse Crew members of the 38th Bolt from launch pad after arming Jack has been pulled. Last men out Many a visitor has put into a 38thtac missile Wing launch site in Ger Many for a close up glimpse of a missile count Down. And by All Odds the missile Man who draws the most stares from such a group is the Guy who pulls the missile arming Jack. When he races off the pad with the pin held High and red ribbon streaming no observer whether Veteran reporter or freshman coed need be told that under launch conditions the time would be closet Zero actually to All intents and purposes it is although the Man who pulls the Jack gets the lion s share of attention the lightning action of the last minute involves two other launch technicians. Their coordination Over the earsplitting Roar of the Jet engine is a Model of teamwork. Top Man of the Trio which remains on the pad is the Crew chief whose position is at the aft end of the Bird. His last act before his Hasty departure is to yank two cables from the missile the Start fuel and Power lines. This leaves the umbilical Cable As the Only connection Between the fire control Point and the missile. Through it the launch officer maintains Complete control Over the weapon. Also on the scene is a fire guard who stands by with a fire extinguisher in the event of emergencies. Probably the lad with the arming Jack moves faster because his Job is not yet finished. He must still deliver the pin tothe fire control Box. With this done the Bird is approximately 30 seconds away from launch time during the real thing. Every Man of the 10-Man launch team is thoroughly trained in every aspect of the launch. Each can fill in for a stricken Comrade with no slowdown in operations. All teams strive for the utmost in realism in their performance. As a matter of fact it s been remarked that the Crews go though their endless round of Day and night launching a As if the survival world depended on it.
