European Stars And Stripes (Newspaper) - September 5, 1967, Darmstadt, Hesse Page 6 the stars and stripes tuesday september 5, 1967 a laugh a minute with the Birds and bees by Dick West Washington up critics of the press Are fond of asserting that while newspapers generally do a Good Job of reporting hard news they Are weak on background an interpretation. This May be so but the complaint can be applied with equal Force to the other popular Media namely magazines and television. Permit me to cite afew examples. I have at hand a couple of recent Magazine articles on sex education which is certainly a topic that demands Complete background and full interpretation. Yet both omit or ignore the key Point. One article says that sex i ridiculous when described to children before they Are read to understand it. The other says that schools have difficult finding teachers who can teach the subject without being embarrassed themselves. What these articles fail to Point out is that sex is ridiculous1 even after you Are old enough to understand it. Infant the better you understand it the More ridiculous i becomes. And that not embarrassment is the real reason Why schools have trouble finding sex Educa Tion teachers. It is almost impossible for a teacher to discuss the subject and still keep a straight a sex education teacher turns red he or she is no blushing from embarrassment. He or she is merely trying to suppress a Giggle. So much for the failure of magazines to grasp the True significance of a situation. Owlet s examine television which is equally adept at missing the Point. A Good illustration was the recent program dealing with the controversial question is i True blondes have More fun certainly that question de serves a penetrating analysis. Yet Many viewers found the program vague contradictory and confusing. The reason is that the question cannot be answered satisfactorily without first an swering two related questions More fun than whom and More fun doing what the program tended to appraise blondes in relation to brunettes. But no attention was paid to the possibility that a Brunette s idea of fun might be different from that of a blonde. Until these matters Are clarified the Only conclusion that can be reached is that some blondes have More fun than other blondes.
