Two conflicts exist in this novel. The first is Between Richmon Considine a former writer crippled by arthritis and his energetic wife Mary who earns the family s living by teaching  daily drama of the couple and their numerous children living in a ramshackle House in a Damp Forest Glade is punctuated by the violent quarrels Between the parents imaginative storytelling by the father and the villainous attacks of the rent seeking landlord. In the other major thread Huia the love child of the Eldes Considine boy faces conflict in her daily life because she is partly Maori and partly  the future ruler of her tribe she is proud of her Maori heritage yet she feels love and sympathy toward the Considine family which is supporting and educating her after the death of her  before Hula s Maori great Grandfather Dies he presents her with the Taka Rangi an ancient and famous Greenstone carved into a grotesque human form. This Stone which gives the title to the Book is symbolic of the Maori traditions and their  the Only descendant of the old chief Huia takes responsibility for this Stone the tribal lands and traditions of her , on the other hand helps to resolve the conflict Between Richmond and Mary Considine. From both conflicts the people emerge whole in spirit and More capable of giving love to others.
