Total debt subject to the $358billion ceiling fixed by Congress earlier this year Rose to $340.3billion last monday at that time the $4.5 billion in new Cash borrowed last wee went on the department s books. The previous High was Onset. 28 when the debt subject to the ceiling reached $337.7 Bil lion. The debt at the end of the last fiscal year june 30 was$326.47 billion. Treasury officials now say they must borrow about $17 Bil lion in new Cash during the six months which end dec. 31 to pay the government s Bills sinc Congress has failed thus far to raise taxes. About $13 billion of this has been borrowed. The need for new Cash had been fixed at $15 billion if the 10 per cent tax surcharge had gone into effect As proposed by presi Dent Johnson on oct. 1 for individuals and last july for corporations.
