They challenged him to go with them to fearsome Cool really psychedelic soul  Voeller whose taste in music never has been con fined to Only baroque fugues and esoteric chamber recitals he worked his Way through College playing a jazz Horn went along with the fun. There we were in that packed dimly lit Hall he recalls with that great group blasting away they were tuned in so loud their own amplifier was drown ing them out. All that came through was a table Jit tearing sonic whom whom but were they eve going through the Gimmicky gyrations one Guy kept kicking the amplifier. He s not making the Motley of tuned in to . A smooth performance of soul and beat music during seminar. Music that Way Voeller commented and was in formed yen but it s the in1 thing to  after the Jam session Voeller s would be educators waited expectantly for his evaluation. He gave it to them  Good he said and proceeded to tick off Why he considered the group players not  he made sense. End result of the critique the High school beat group asked if they could be part of his upcoming seminar. He welcomed them on his terms that the learn to read music to show for 7 30 . Prac Tice sessions that they turn Down their amplifier. Thev can Tell they re putting their numbers across More effectively than before. They re pretty enthuse  re not the Only ones. In fact the big boys the letter men Are turning out As eagerly for choir As foot Ball a sure sign that the music program has some thing pretty special going for it. It in t hard to guess what that special something is it s Voeller  s a ruggedly handsome live wire who looks As much like a school coach As a music director but that in t what s making All the kids join his team. It s not his appearance but his Outlook that makes the  m open minded about All types of music Rock Folk hillbilly All have meaning he says. But i m very narrow minded about non professional work. I expect the kids to turn out smooth performances to take their music  he takes it  he s in the midst of one of these projects you might say i see him occasionally says his wife a pretty former nurse. Besides teaching concert band choir and 7th and 8thgrade general music he holds before school after school and noon rehearsals plus weekend stagehand sessions also gives private tutoring to kids he feels have unusual Talent. One such tutoring Job take Shim All the Way to Heidelberg once a week where he helps a former student of his keep up with his  earned his a and a at  College St. Paul minn., then taught in the Virgin islands Anat Ramey air Force base in Piu to Rico where he organized a band and vocal festival which included900 students. He credits his wife for helping him come up wit the idea of the festivals. She says she does t have any artistic Talent but she does have a Good  s my Best  As far As Voeller is concerned too Many teacher sin his Field make a practice of handing out Only the old Standard recital fare a real mistake As he sees  need a Challenge he contends.
