It was the second tragic blow within a month for Colin Chapman who helped design the Lotus Turbine in which Spence met his death at Indianapolis. Chapman s Long time Friend and driving Star Jim Lark was killed Only one month before Spence s fatal Accident. Spence a former member of the Lotus team in Europe had Bee no. 2 Driver behind Clark until he joined bum last year Graham Hill taking Over behind Clark. After Spence s death Chapman withdrew from the Indianapolis race citing the two deaths As his reason. Carroll Shelby who also had three tur Bines entered for the May 30 race also withdrew leaving the Turbine threat or what May be left of it to Andy Granatelli who is sponsoring the Lotus Turbine , who finished 10th last year in the world championship standings was a Veteran of 10 years of grand prix driving.
