European Stars And Stripes (Newspaper) - June 3, 1968, Darmstadt, Hesse Page 18 the stars and stripes monday june Dobson Lasher sparkle sports writers like All politicians imaginative combat troopers French chefs and Ordinary housewives often Yak All week about that Book they re Gonna write one of these Days. Guess i m not much different. Like most of the prospective authors i know i would rather sit Down with friends and a Cool brew and talk about my adventures than close myself off fro the world and labor Over a typewriter. Now Don t get the idea that i m Lazy. After All i be been inthe Book writing business for a Long time. First there was the one entitled baseball s great it was followed by fro Shibuya to Pialle and then world series at last month i started on one called my Friend the bashful coach so far i be written four chapters one for each Book. But As i keep explaining to my puzzled wife who wonders Why Haven t completed just one Job in All these years All the fun in writing a Book is in getting it started. So i just keep plugging away in my own Why finish today what you can finish tomorrow style. Already i m on another write a Book kick and i m calling it my nutty friends who play in Sand now this is my favorite Type of Book because i like Golf an the longer i put off finishing it the More i la have to put in it. Tomorrow. When i m playing Golf which is quite often i keep a stubby Pencil in my Bac pocket and Jot Down notes about amusing Inci dents embarrassing moments historic events etc., on the Backof a scorecard. I m probably the Only golfer in the world who keeps All his scorecards and files them upside Down. By doing this i can easily reassure myself that there is a Bright Side to this otherwise frustrating sport. My favorite old scorecard backside of course deals witha head and head match i had with one of my fellow sports writers at Ramstein s Woodlawn course a few years ago. My opponent a Strong waisted texan became the first golfers d Ever seen who hit his drive past the Green on a Par-4 Hole. It was a mighty Wallop which i m sure Jack Nicklaus Wouldhave been proud of. I was awed. It showed too because i dribbled my tee shot about 100 Yards hit another Wood Short of the Green chipped on and two putted for a 5. Then we continued across the Green to look for my Friend s finally found it deep deep in the Woods. It took him three shots to get Back to the Green and two More to get Down for closing 6. Out came my old Needle. Never saw a Guy hit a drive so far on a Par-4 that it took him three shots to get Back kept telling him. It was the turning Point. I won 1-up. Tourney Lousy shot and there was that big tourney at Hanau that i shall never forget. Hard As i might try. Must have been a Hundred people around the first tee just waiting for some one to give pm some tiling to Giggle about. Well i did t disappoint them. Quiet please or. Wicker on the tee said the starter wit the Iron lungs. I took a Good swipe at the old Dunlop and away it went about six inches off the ground. It hit one of the Markerson the ladies tee and came flying Back right Over my head and 20 Yards into the thick Bushes. Three wedge shots later i was right Back where i had started from Only with Muddy White shoes and leaves in my hair. Taking a break from my work there on the first tee i glanced up at the crowd thinking that perhaps some one would offer a word or two of sympathy. But i saw nothing but a Bunch of smiling faces it w s apparent that no one had bet a dime on me getting off the longest drive. There s a Sand trap at the Frankfurt course know As Gus it was so dubbed by one of the men in our group after a Chap we know by the name of Gus set what has to be some kind of record for playing around in a single Sand trap. Old Gus who has been known to break 100, just did t have it this Day on this particular Hole. He hit Oyhat appeared to be a pretty fair tee shot on the Par-3 Hole but it faded inches into the trap. Blast blast blast. Finally on his 23rd shot with the blaster the Ball glided out As Beautiful As you please although a bit Cut up by this time and came to rest some 10 feet from the pin. Gus foes who had enjoyed the Sandy show conceded the putt. Gus did t argue. After All How often do you card a 25 on a Par-3without even putting easy putt on it. Fuji Over in Japan i saw a Fella s putt Roll out of Bounds. Foursome reason he did t seem too concerned Over the two stroke penalty but he was boiling mad because he could t retrieve Heball which rolled under a High Fence that hugged the Green. It was also in Japan this time at the stars and stripes pres club bar that i overheard a conversation that led ones a golfer right to the top of it. Fuji. The Fella who made the trek up the Mountain to win a Wager 1 Case of Beer not Only made the clip i cult climb but he hit a Golf Ball Many As it turned out All the Way up. He came Back to the office to do a feature Story about his unusual Day of Golf and started it out by saying today Imade the easiest putt of my life right into the Crater atop it. what have you readers observed lately around the Golf course drop me a note at Apo 09175 and i la add your funny or unusual Story to my collection.
