European Stars And Stripes (Newspaper) - June 8, 1968, Darmstadt, Hesse Page 18 the stars and stripes in describing the sad slate of Woods memorial Field at Mann Heim Kae Fertal one of our conclusions was that no one seemed to care. What we be Learned since is that things just looked that Way because vandalism has nullified every attempt to Spruce up the sports Complex. Several people have strongly indicated they care particularly capt. Stephen Munson North palatinate District Spe Cial services officer who related a near two year Battle of frustration for himself and his staff. That plus some pretty unbelievable stories of vandalism that repeatedly thwarted efforts to restore Woods to something like it once was. We be also talked with it. Werner Gregg of the Mannheim civil affairs office who outlined How teen gangs have caused Trou ble not Only at Woods but in the local Community. He s told us of some pretty Strong action by commanders involved. We be also talked with col. Robert d. Montondo chief of Usa eur special services and with a spokesman for the 537th my co at Kae Fertal. We know that col. Marvin d. Oberman the North palatinate District Provost marshal Mannheim High officials and literally hundreds of Aya teenagers who volunteered to help repair dam age done by these vandals Are All interested. Deteriorating facilities probably vandalism has t made the problem nearly As acute elsewhere As at Woods but deteriorating athletic facilities Are unfortunately a fairly common occurrence around military communities of Europe. We be Only pin pointed one but there Are doubt less Many More. We understand that Lee Barracks in main has some pretty sad looking baseball facilities and a restroom that is More like an outhouse. We be been told that soldiers Fielda Nuernberg in t in the Best of shape and we know from personal observation that Vogel Weh s track and football facilities could stand some sprucing up. We Don t intend to Start a Witch Hunt or climb anyone s Many cases special services people Are hard pressed for funds and manpower. This is the Case at Woods. If a Little publicity about particular athletic facilities might do some Good we d like to hear about them. A note to this column stars & stripes apo09175 61 Darmstadt Postrach 1034. German mail would be welcomed. Keeping athletic facilities what they should be takes not Only work but cooperation from the local Community. A few recent incidents seem to indicate that a bit More of this cooperation fro the people who live around and use the Woods facilities would not seem a May 26 baseball game Between Mannheim and Berlin one of our staffers saw youngsters wait behind the Backstop for fouls scrambling for the balls then racing for the housing area with their nearly new $1.50 with the Ball safely stashed the came Back for a repeat try. Since no my was present a special services no tried to Stem the flow of his fast diminishing suppl of baseballs. He was booed by adults in the stands. The sergeant quipped i d like to give each team 10 balls and leave them responsible for the also a Young Driver mane Vered his car onto the roped off football Field track and spun out on his de parture. On another occasion a special services no apprehended teenager stealing parts of bleacher seats. The teen kicked the no in the shins and ran away Only to few involved at a May 4 8th div baseball opener another staffer noted Young sters climbing the Backstop All the Way to the top with the game in Progress. Again with no my there the chief Umpire had to Stop the game to Chase youngsters Down. At both games and another May 11, at which this reporter was present Small youngsters we rerunning unsupervised atop the vip Section which is 15-20 feet High and without protective railing. They could have been seriously injured by a fall. Of course Only a few individuals Are involved but in Genera these examples do not exhibit Community cooperation or adult parental responsibility. Neither do broken bottles and paper litter remaining after a sports event. Athletic facilities Are intended to serve everyone. Officials do not mind their being used and use often. Without pointing a Finger at anyone might we Point out that a Little cooperation could help make some of those facilities easier to keep looking trim. This applies not Only at Woods but anywhere there is an athletic Plant. Getting Back to Woods specifically Munson has told us of Many attempts to improve the Plant. Virtually every part of it has Naci some sort of major repair in the past 1ft years. That include the perimeter Fence the Backstop dugouts on the baseball Field the football Field track and seating area restrooms and the con cession stand. Despite these projects the restroom plumbing and wiring has been repaired four times and steel doors locked except or special events protect them the area still looks very bad Impromptu nighttime drag racing on the track have left it practically devoid of cinders despite replenishment twice in the past 18 months. Gaping holes remain in the perimeter Fence where the were slashed to permit cars to enter. There Are no drinking fountains in the dugouts because they were used to flood both of themis tie past. The Concession building was torn Down after vandals had torn of both doors and partially knocked Down one Wall a least 15 per cent of the bleachers have been wrecked after repeated thefts and use of parts to build All sorts of creative we could go on and on. Gregg is optimistic that the worst vandalism has been con continued on pay 22 5-3 score tigers tip botox on Cash blast Boston up Norm Cash belted a three run Homer for Detroit offsetting a three run blast by Carl Yastrzemski to give the tigers a 5-3 Victory Over the Boston red sox Northrup connected for a two run Homer that gave Detroit a 2-0 Lead in the first inning but Yastrzemski put the red sox temporarily ahead with his Homer in the Bottom of the same inning.
