European Stars And Stripes (Newspaper) - August 8, 1968, Darmstadt, Hesse By John Williamson the stars and stripes Page 21 playoffs a spite the problems presented by the Weatherman theims edition of the Woodlawn invitational Golf meet has to be wire cd a Success. There was a Good representation of the Betti he golfers on the european pro tour who All remained around the end despite the soggy conditions there was a full card a amateurs on hand for each Day of Competition and finally i nne could have asked for a More rousing finish than the exciting three Hole playoff for the title Between Frank Phillips and Marty Roesink. The playoff was followed by an enthusiastic group of spec tors which had been swelling All afternoon monday As the Lim broke through about 11 30 . For the first time since Anfelt Lendl was made to Start the tourney on Friday. Despite it Hulne a work Day people kept pouring on to the Woodlawn ours to see the finish. I saw Many people in the crowd who i recognized As being from Heidelberg Frankfurt and other Points a Good couple of hours drive away. Also in evidence throughout the crowd were Many Gorma fans who also managed to take a Day away from work to watch he golfers perform. I think this Points out that Golf has a larger Spectator interest in this part of the world than most people be Lieve i also think it Points out the special place that the annual Wood Lawu tourney has on the sports Calendar in Germany. However it should be pointed out that the tournament is in danger of losing the prestige it has built up Over the past eleven years. A tournament that drops its prize Money listings from $11 300 to $4,050 in one year is not liable to keep on attracting the Best of the pros. Even if it did there is question As to whether or not the German professional golfers association would continue to Sanction it much less keep it in its very favourable spot of one week after the German open each year. Time for decision i understand that certain Legal complications made it impossible to raise the funds this year that would have been required to produce the same kind of prize listings As has been turned out in the past. To this i say that it is time to make a decision. Either a Way must be found to circumvent the Legal problems or the tournament should be cancelled. There s no use in trying to go big time on a Small time budget. Nineteen of the 55 pros that played in this year s event share Din the prize Money with the largest amount going to Phillips who picked up a total of $1,112.50 including his $1,000 first in the line of winners was h. J. Lorenz of Germany who pocketed s18.75 for his round of 69 on the final Day that tied him with two others for the third Low round of the Day. That kind of Money just in t going to entice the name it would be a shame to see the tournament deteriorate into a stopping off place for the professionals who can t quite make it into the bigger events. I would like to see the Woodlawn invitational retain its place As one of Europe s biggest golfing events. While i m at it i would like to add that i would like to see it return to a 72-Hole format. The Ideal would be to have the pro am events on thursday and Friday and then have 18 holes per Day on saturday and sunday so More of the Golf hungry fans american and German could get to see the action. Watch this fellow right now i would like tomake my nomination for the Man to watch when the usar eur Golf championships Are held the beginning of next month in Berlin.
