European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - September 02, 1968, Darmstadt, Hesse Monday sell my of 2 the stars and stripes Post 24 err Sench raiders comets vie today there will be an official championship series Between the usar and Safe baseball champions this year and officials of units have arranged their football schedules in such manner hat a football championship game cd also be staged. The respective officials have put their Best foot Forward at was much clamouring for a showdown Between the Berlin hears usage aft s very Fine football Champion and Safe Best the Rhein main rockets last november. But alas such a contest never got played although the teams apparently were willing. There has evidently been a great Deal of thinking and program adjusting on the parts of both sides since last november and we sneaking from a perhaps biased Angle because we feel the More sports the better Are glad to Welcome such changes. We should like to see such cooperation go one big step about combined clinics both Safe and Usa eur conduct excellent clinics for their athletes trainers and officials during the course of a year but we happen to feel that the clinics could be even better through consolidation. Three Grid clinics flyers bomb Wethersfield Advance to Safe finals by Ben Abrams staff writer Wiesbaden is thematic number dwindled to one for the Wiesbaden flyers her sunday. The flyers whipped the Wethersfield raiders 7-1, in a win ners bracket game of the double elimination Safe baseball finals and need Only one More Victory to Clinch the coveted Crown the Darmstadt come shave won the past two Cam comets Are still around in the 1968 tournament and one to go As an example let s take a look at separate football clinics were staged this summer and eight personalities were brought from the states. Safe s clinic was staged in late june and featured Texas am coach Gene Stallings Syracuse Mentor Ben Schwartzwalder National football league official Tommy Bell and Pacific coast official Frank Fidler. A fifth personality Missouri s Dan Devine also was schedule but he had to Back out when some last minute unexpected difficulties arose., a Short time later Usa eur brought Houston Mentor Bill Yeo Man his assistant Melvin Robertson and trainee Ken Rawlinson of the University of Oklahoma to Europe. Two weeks after that Ron Dibbs came abroad and conducted an official s clinic for Usa eur personnel. That scheduling from our Point of View bordered on the ridiculous. But last year s basketball clinics seemed to approach a Cut Throat attitude. The rival sessions were held the same week within30 Miles of each other Usa eur staging its sessions at bad Kreuz Nach with Adolph Rupp of Kentucky Fame As its Mai attraction while Safe was holding its classes at Wiesbaden with Duke s Vic Bubas and Oklahoma City s Abe Lemons would t it have been More logical to have held joint clinics in basketball last fall and football this summer not to mention baseball and other sports the Money Angle ii certainly would be Wiser from a Money Angle to alone would mean Money saved. If two or three men were brought Over for a combined program it certainly would Bemore economical than having the air Force pick up the Tab for three or four and the army pick up the Tab for another group or the department of defense be responsible for a total of eight people for travel Board and these people Are brought Over Here they Are Given a pretty High status to make such things As travel and accommodation easier to acquire. We feel there is another Factor in favor of joint operations. This would be attendance. During our 34 years with the stars & stripes sports staff we have covered some clinics whore the turnout mad bringing someone or More than one from the . To Germany hardly worthwhile. What a Fine impression it would make on a clinic stuff to walk into a session and see Many people waiting for Wisdom. It would give them the idea that the people Over Here really do want to learn about football or basketball or baseball. I should think that coming All the Way from America to conduct a clinic for is or 18 people would be dismaying. On our assignments at these clinics we have received Complete cooperation from both air Force and army personnel in charge. They have gone out of their Way to Supply us with information and work facilities so that we might have the opportunities to rive our readers better coverage. We know these men to be mos cooperative extensive army program currently the army s clinic program is larger in scope than mat of Safe. While the air Force program evolves around the we three sports the army program also includes intramural sports softball wrestling boxing and volleyball. The joint clinic idea becomes even More feasible with the Rev elation that Usa eur is not going to have a basketball coaches school Thia year. Perhaps the air Force and army personnel have their reasons or conducting separate programs. Perhaps there Aren t enough accommodations available to handle larger turnouts or perhaps inc idea never even has been any rate we Don t believe that whatever problems May exist cannot be resolved for the Good of a better Over All , such a program can come about with a Little consultation. By getting together As evidenced in the recent decision to have baseball championship playoff and setting up the schedules to allow a football showdown a fab and Usa eur can present a truly outstanding clinics program to All of our troops in Europe at a lesser Cost to the american people.
