European Stars And Stripes (Newspaper) - April 29, 1977, Darmstadt, Hesse April 1977 the stars and stripes Page 11 a defense of the api system i am writing in response to the recent letter on the american preparatory inst i have worked for for 18 months six months As a language arts instructor and 12 months As a site adminis and thus feel qualified to refute the misinformation found in this the writer contends that api is not Cost effective to the although our tul condensed is one suggestion Why Doest the stars and stripes just moosh up the comics into a i by 1 Inch Square and print excerpts from the encyclopedia Britannica on pages 12 and 17 it would open up extraordinary new worlds for us out Here in you could condense the sports into a similar Little Square and print the pulitzer prize winning Why Johnny cant find his Elbow on pages 21 through the opportunities Are before you get in not biting you in the in heh heh kidding keep up the Good work and Happy sincerely As possible with Tongue in sol Chris Rasums Sembach Germany Here we went and Saquoie the comics Down is per gave you a new How to keep Well gave you Breslyn three times a and you Are on our the Britannica excerpts Cost too and Yon probably dont re Mem but we ran the pulitzer prize Winner on acupuncture Why Johnny cant find his month with his Fork just last but we for dont Swallow your Good show id just like to say thanks to whoever runs morning people on an whoever it is makes cd and night shifts s Michael Germany Uon is higher than it should be remembered that 1 this tuition was agreed upon by in order to provide a Quality 2 api is not part of Dod and thus has higher operating and 3 apis tuition is so less than any similarly contracted civilian institution in the api does not reduce class room exposure by per we also offer 160 hours of but have three two hour class periods instead of two three hour class periods per Day in a six week thus api students Are offered an additional subject within a six hour two hour class periods Are not As taxing on the attention Span As three hour class Peri statements on the academic aspects of api illustrate a Complete Lack of under standing of competency based in the competency based Stu dents work at their own the amount of credit a student earns depends upon the number of tests the student an academically Superior student with a great Deal of motivation is not held Back by the rest of the class in the amount of credit he a slower student does not have to worry about keeping up with the rest of the he works at a slower but at a Speed where he is really our students also enjoy the flexibility of moving from class to class during the Cycle As they Complete their credits in their from my personal Point of i feel competency based education is Ideal for service members with diverse educational when i taught traditional lecture classes to the i always Felt so per cent of the class was with 25 per cent were bored because they already knew what i was and 25 per cent were lost be cause the subject matter was too in my competency based i Felt All my students were learning and earning credit at a rate which was appropriate to their individual my lesson plans consisted of an individual plan for each student for each i Felt that i got to know my students better because i worked with each one individually on a daily it was stated that our curriculum is Akin to the old correspondence course our curriculum was devel oped at our Home Campus in and is approved by our accrediting the Texas education it is constantly being held tested and improved by our program coordinators both in Europe and on our Home in sure the classroom atmosphere Ive described in the proceeding paragraph negates any suspicion that our classes Are correspondence api has been a Success in Berlin for 18 months and a Success at Hood since i Hope this letter will Clear up any misconceptions which might i also Hope that api will be supported and welcomed at our new Sites As we were Here in Minnehaha Berlin letters to the editor commissary atrocities1 claimed the atrocities of the Forth commissary have become so numerous that i feel they should be brought to All of the usual complaints Are prevalent but with More Validity than i have witnessed in any other commissary in the it is not unusual to stand in line for Over an hour because Only two of the six or seven registers Are this is any Day of the not lust if you Are Able to find even one of the things you have written on a its cause Tor some items Arent seen for i have listened to All of the memorized explanations for problems in computer or no Cashiers the commissary is not designed to serve so Many i dont believe i can drive to other commissaries and find the and All Cashiers Are its been Over a year since the new order ing system was surely that Long enough to work out the even for slow perhaps there Are no Cashiers available because slave labor is not a delightful they work grueling they work an eight hour Day with Only 45 minutes for lunch and Only one is minute when Long lines exist at closing they work All of the things mentioned Are bad enough in but add unsanitary conditions and rats running rampant people have seen them during shopping hours and there should be More concern and action taken to rectify the a glaring example of the rat and certainly not the Only is a woman new to the area that went to the commissary and saw a rat run right in front of she screamed and protested Only to be told that it want that so what will be done probably letter humorous having read your newspaper for almost two i fee the need to commend you on what i consider your humor Section letters to the perhaps this Section was not intended to be humorous i must i rate it two Points above the comics As a Means of creating instant hilarity and rollicking Bob Hope would undoubtedly consider it a Windfall to be Able to use some of the material that appears in this in today rapidly inflating where else can one find such gut splitting humor for the paltry sum of is cents on any Given Day one is sure to find a Laughin Spir ing dissertation on the Price of or a hilarious attack on an or the Exchange Barking stairwell unavailability of this or bad talking poor no Vio Lence on television and the inequities of the system have often brought me to the Point of tears when keep up the Good work and keep those cards and letters coming because those of us who have no no no com nor any of the other military Ben Nies can use this sort of entertainment i might add that if you should not be Able to provide the laughs in the dont there still remains the food and Sites of Europe and if people i am sure they still find them truly Walter Sanders Rome All letters to the editor must contain full printed name and address of the and must be Ive seen no improvement in eight i still remain optimistic enough to Hope someone will see this and care or be in a position to do something about Germany editors note William army troop sup port replies during the period october to Decem Ber 1976 there was a shortage of Cashiers in the Furth commissary As the writer has it was extremely difficult for the commissary officer to operate More than two or three of the seven Check out this problem was solved in january 1977 with the use of temporarily employed the commissary officer now experiences no difficulty in operating As Many checkout lanes As Are Cashiers work a Standard eight hour Day with a 45 minute lunch period and a 15 minute break after every continuous four hours of this is not considered to be slave labor As indicated by the it is difficult to provide an explanation to an individual who has already made up her mind that the explanation offered Wilt not be a it is True that the Furth commissary facility is not of sufficient Sloe to serve the number of people presently shop Ping this problem will not be re solved within the near the problems of out stocks Are being solved and the commissary officer advised that the writer should not be experiencing the difficulties that were Preva Lent in the it is True that rodents were quite numerous throughout the Furth commissary positive action on the part of the rodent control personnel of the Furth Community has been the writer is
