European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - May 26, 1977, Darmstadt, Hesse Page 18 the stars and stripes thursday May 24, 1977 new York at the close of last sum Mer s democratic National convention at Madison Square Garden Martin Luther King or daddy King turned a nominating procedure into vespers. Amen talking the Southern people Call it. Daddy King s emphasis on verbs sent his sentences Rollin around the Arena As if they were on great silent wheels. Look into your heart nod the goodness. At the end. When Etc body began to sing we shall overcome Silken fingers of emotion were at the away you thought of Selma and in the Sun on the Church Steps or. Martin Luther King jr., was saying that now is the time now is the time for the country to change. Of my life in my business it was the Best Day of All. And Here in Madison Square Garden was the same feeling. The Carters were singing the Mondale were was my Friend Basil Paterson along Side them. If this was to be Jimmy Carter View of the country How could i be against it 1 fell that night that 1 was about to be deprived of the right not to like Jimmyy did not happen. Because i live in a City. And 1 also remember thai on the Las night of the convention. Abe Beame the mayor of new York was up in the Rainbow room the lights of the City splashing across the window at his Back and he showed Aletter he had forced Jimmy Carter to write in return for Beanie s endorsement. Beam was proud of the letter he deserved to be. In the letter Carter promised Beame that the Federal government would turn around and face the problems of the cities. Carter also wrote of taking the welfare system out of the hands of the cities. Absolutely marvelous. Since becoming president Carter has sent his wife to new York to buy a dress. And his administration says that welfare Reform is not fit for Dis Cussion in at least this not mean that Carter lied last year f did not believe anything he said and therefore he never did lie to still leaves us with new York which is a collective word for All the cities in the country. All statistics show that we head even More rapidly toward becoming a pre dominantly nonwhite City. Saying pre dominantly nonwhite is like saying the Ocean is predominantly moist. Once the boroughs of this City tip go Over so percent nonwhite. The Job of the moving Man will Bethe most dangerous in All american life. They la get a hernia a week trying to carry All of White Brooklyn out to Long Island. The new York school system is now 70percent nonwhite. This Means that in a generation the City will be nonwhite and Lonmo Ney. Laws insure that Black and hispanics with moving Van Money be allowed to run too. Whenever figures like these Are used they seem too Distant too academic to touch daily life. Usually a sociologist or a professor issues the figures and nobody pays Atten Tion. But place this arithmetic against new York City As it is today sprawling and still glamorous and you see that perhaps the City stands on Sand. New York s main strength is that it is the communications capital of the country. On sixth ave., in a Row stand the headquarter for Abc lbs and Abc. Fine. Take Abc. Lbs and Abc and move them to the suburbs of Washington d.c., a move discussed at times by some executives from at least two of the networks. Then go across sixth ave.,right across the Street and there is time inc. The company is now owned by a Lum Berman from Texas. How Long would it take time inc., to move to the Dallas fort wort area under these circumstances news week the owner lives in this happen and the advertising agencies and the Book publishing business could not function in an area whose Side walks would be Gray deserts. And you now have a Hole in the City that would never close. And new York would begin sliding toward becoming a City of four million nearly All Black and hispanic All poor All besieged by crime and terrified by fire in the night. This is the risk when they say that thing must wait. Who inflation now. Ford said. Balance the budget. Carter says. And now it is another summer and we throw some 350,-000 poverty kids out of schools where they Don t learn much and onto hot streets where there Are few jobs. More of our life drips away. Everybody knows that if it is to York needs to produce a huge nonwhite Middle class. Jobs and Job training and More jobs. Jobs from any place you can get them. Private jobs Public jobs a Combina Tion. Anything. But get jobs. Because then the running stops. Nobody is afraid of a Man who holds a Job. The Teeth grind when you go about the Cit Yand see what it could be. On sunday the Black churches in the City held a Day for Percy Sutton who runs for mayor runs much better than most realize. In St. Am Brose episcopal Church on w. 130th St., two immaculately dressed 10-year-old boys held the doors open and handed out Church Bulle tins. Inside the Church danced in the Low fire of highly polished Wood. The pews we refilled with families dressed so Well they caused you to put on your was Middle cts Harlem. The Only thing that might disturb you about these people is their views on punishment of Crimi nals. Torture. When Sutton spoke from the pulpit separation of Church and state is a thing for lawyers to discuss he reminded the congregation that the reason you can t have meetings in the night is because those with criminal intent Stop seated next to me a Gray haired Man in Brown suit grunted. It is the same Grunt you hear from an italian in Bath Beach when crime is mentioned. From St. Ambrose we went to St. Martin episcopal where the women All Wear Large Straw hats with Flowers. One woman rut Klint a Garden on her head said the Bat was is years old. I Only Wear it on sunday she said. In the greater Refuge Temple a pentecostal Church at 124th St., there were Well Over 1,000 people. The last Stop was at St. Philip s episcopal Church. At the end of services walking out Side into a Bright Sun was a magnificent looking woman named ethling Witter. A Large yellow Straw hat was on her head. She smoothed an expensive Blue Spring coat. She leaned on a polished Cane. Pardon me a am but How old Are you she was asked. I Don t Tell my age. Just judge it. You presupposed to be smart enough to do that she said. She laughed and everybody around her laughed in the sunlight. It was everything that new York and Al the cities in the country could be. Jimy Carter knows All about it. He worked these Lack churches until his voice gave out sing ing hymns and begging these women i easier hats to help get him a nomination. And now he is in Washington taking about balanced budget when we left the churches yesterday we drove Down eighth ave. At 117th St. The heroin mummies crowded the Comers and we came Back from a dream.
