Halberstam famous physician sir William Osier once said there is just one Way to treat cold and that s with few Ameri cans heed this advice. Instead they spend Over $735 million a year or nonprescription decongestants antihistamines and other cough and cold remedies. A recent Pood and drug administration report noted that these medications relieve certain symptoms but do not prevent cure or shorten the common cold itself. It lasts seven to 14 Days no matter what the sufferer docs. Still for most of us there is Solace in doing something even if it does Little Good. That is Why i recommend using cold remedies eve though they arc rarely dramatically effective. Certain medications to be sure can re Lieve specific symptoms provided these drugs Are used example locally applied decongestants in the form of nose drops or sprays can relieve Stuffy noses whether caused by colds or allergies. These preparation shrink dilated blood vessels and temporarily reduce swelling in the mucous membranes lining the nasal passageway thereby allow ing Freer there is a Hazard. Often As the effect wears off the membrane swell again some times worse than before the drops and sprays. After about three Days a condition known in medical jargon is the rebound phenomenon or More elegantly As May develop. To break this vicious Cycle some physicians advise discontinuing nose drops or sprays on one Side for several Days and thenon the other. This allows breathing on one Side while the other recovers from the re bound effects of the decongestant. Avoid the rebound phenomenon by using topical decongestants no More than three Days at a time at recommended decongestants do not cause the re bound phenomenon but still should not reused longer than a week. These medications Are not recommended for people with High mood pressure heart disease diabetes or thyroid help relieve Runny nose sneezing and itchy eyes and nose caused by allergies. These drugs also help similar symptoms that May occur in the common cold although they do not relieve the cold precaution antihistamines Are not recommended for people with asthma glaucoma or prostate disease and they May cause drowsiness which might make it dangerous to operate automobiles or machinery. Cough suppressants Antitussive temporarily relieve the urge to cough but some times the cough reflex is essential for Clearing secretions from the lungs Ana should not be suppressed. Anybody with persistent cough should consult a physician. A fever of Over 100 degrees fahrenheit is no part of an Ordinary cold in an adult and should be reported to a doctor. Various cold remedies May cause minor Side effects such As drowsiness excessively dry nose and Mouth and combined nervous Ness and sleeplessness if taken before bed time. More serious Side effects have Bee reported but such occurrences Are unusual. Perhaps the greatest concern about col medications is that they cause the sufferer to neglect simpler Home remedies for the common cold that Are equally effective and far less expensive. These include bed rest drinking a lot of fluids tepid Baths and Aspi Rin to relieve minor aches and fever. And no cold sufferer was Ever made worse by trying the proverbial Panacea for so Many human ills Chicken soup and hot teddies separately of course.
