Letters to the de Tor Carter s global efforts praised of the South Tower last May 26. I m jus sorry i did t think of we were on the roof looking Down at him o Connell said. Jimmy brought our Rig around and we sent the cops i watched him climbing i realized he knew what he was men dangling on the window Wash ing platform from the 110th floor proves Tobe a disagreeable appetizer to patrons of the windows on the lot of people get All Shook up o con Nell said. We be had to. Stop a number ofttimes. People in the restaurant think we re crazy he said. They come to the window and twirl their ringer around their think you re crazy for doing what you re doing. I just admired the nerve o Connell s. Fascination with height prompted him to quit a Job painting used to watch men hanging from safety belts and i wondered How they had the nerve to do it. So i decided to try and was fascinated he Connell worked at the Empire slate building before joining the Trade Center screw. Meehan hates the height of a diving Board. His decision to make a living thou Sands of feet in the air was a practical one."1 was looking for a Job and it was the Only Job i could get at the time he Connell recalls feeling a Little leery his first time once i was up there i realized i could handle it. There s a lot More pres sure in this Job o Connell said. There s More than one person you have to look never accustomed Meehan who washed windows with a Hospital Crew for 14 years. Is surprised he Ever made it Over the Side of the build ing you re never really used to it Meehan said. The Only Way i can explain it is it s like the first time you drive a car. You re a Little nervous but then you get used to two men survived a number of close time the fuse blew. We pushed the up Button but the Rig went Down o con Nell said. The Rig s gone sideways or tilted. You just have to he prepared for the worst and hold never get used to this Meehan said. "1 Tell my wife it s like the titanic All the Modem i would like to make a few observations of Jimmy Carter s time in the office of the president of the United states so less than 190 Days since assuming the presidency. Carter has upset the russian with the talk of human rights Temple the vietnamese with innuendos and pacified the cubans with indications of acceptance. Nations once enemies of the unite states Are now taking Steps to initiate talks to discuss our differences of opinion i almost cordial and Welcome atmospheres. The vietnamese Are finally beginning to give a bit More information on the mias missing in action than before even re turning bodies voluntarily. Cuba s recent announcement of return ing 10 of 30 american prisoners currently bang held on political grounds is a great stepping Stone toward normalizing cuban american relations especially since incomes on the heels of Rosalynn Carter s recent trip to latin american where she expressed the president s wishes to improve relations with our nearest communist neighbor. As mrs. Carter expressed it in her new conference in Jamaica some very difficult problems in the area of human right must be solved first perhaps Cuba is now willing to negotiate these difficult prob lems involving political prisoners and fam Ilies separated from their relatives. Cubans certainly showing initiative in this recent turn of Carter s stand on human rights is perhaps the most difficult Pill to Swallow especially for the soviet Union. But eventually the people of the soviet Union will probably learn about it and agree with it forcing the government to nuke certain concessions toward its implementation. This will be a major Ste Forward in . Worldwide foreign policy. We in the United states army have no right to determine policy in world affairs. Our Job is to protect rather than to protect our country s Liberty and free Dom rather than to defend our beliefs that Only our policies and none other Are right for the world. Who Are we to dictate our Job in the . Army should not be to make War but merely to preserve the peace. The Steps Carter is taking in improving ties with communist counties Are Good. I think. When in the past several years haste United states Ever formally acknowledged Cuba s existence As More than minor Extension of Russia As now when we Are finally accepting them As a nation we can be friends with we have established fishing rights and tourist Trade forthe first time in 15 years. When in the past years has the United states been More willing to admit the War it fought in Viet Nam was wrong than now and when i history has the United states Ever acknowledged another nation to be equal i not Superior. In us capacity to destroy the world now is the time. is not in the future. It is today. And never was it More import Jant than at the present for two nations to accept and realize with alarm that it Isnow. We Are not playing a game. We Are playing with the future of human existence upon this Globe. And we must come to terms with it before has an administration been forced to consider such Odds. Never before has an administration been so will ing to make such concessions toward Long lasting peace. I think Jimmy Carter is doing a goo Job. I think he is willing to change the past and i think this is very Good.-spec.4 Patrick Keusey Mainz Germany turn in items i would like to know what items of cloth ing Are now required for turn in upon completion of service.
