Walther von Seydlitz. While von Seydlitz is not a household word to americans his name is Well known in military circles in Germany be cause of his activities with the russian during world War ii said or. Don Carnes whose manuscript about von Seydlitz is now being reviewed by a German publisher in Munich. Carnes said that von Seydlitz was one of 22 German generals captured at Stalin Grad by the russians in january 1943. He was second in command of the 6th German army under Gen. Friedrich von Paulus. While a prisoner of War von Seydlitz decided to work with the russians to Over throw Hitler and replace him with a Politi Cal leadership chosen by the germans said Carnes. His actions and example brought his own name and family into ill repute and open persecution according to Carnes some germans consider von Seydlitz a dreamer others think he s a Patriot and some consider him a traitor. Carnes met and began interviewing the former general in 1974, two years before the general died in Bremen. I interviewed him 12 times. Each ses Sion lasted three hours. I completed his biography on april 28, 1976, the Day von Seydlitz died. My Book when published will puncture the illusion that Hitler was an Ordinary Leader and will Clear von Seydlitz the manuscript will be translated into German he said. Carnes said that he is upset with some of the recent books published about Hitler. Von Seydlitz considered Hitler to be the greatest criminal Leader in hundreds of years said Carnes. That is Why he at tempted to overthrow von Seydlitz was not a communist. But he was willing to take desperate measures to try to topple the nazi Leader said Carnes. Because he would not convert to communism the soviets tried him in 1950 As a War criminal and jailed him until october 1955, when Chancellor Konrad Adenauer pressured the soviets to release All German prisoners held since world War ii. Der Spiegel a weekly German news Magazine recently published excerpts from the general s memoirs. The Maga Zine treated von Seydlitz As an opponent of Hitler rather than a traitor but questioned his waiting so Long to openly oppose the German Leader. Some opponents never acted. A few did. A Small group attempted to kill Hitler with a bomb in july 1944. They were All quickly rounded up along with a number of innocent people and executed by the nazis Carnes said. After that there was no Mentio Nable opposition to Hitler in Germany. But in Russia von Seydlitz and a number of German officers openly opposed Hitler. They made radio broadcasts to the German troops fighting on the East Ern front and to the German people at Home. They called on the germans to dump Carnes said von Seydlitz worked with German communists men like Walter Ulbricht Wilhelm Pieck Anton Ackermann and Karl Maron men who were later in stalled by the russians As government leaders in East Germany. Carnes said von Seydlitz also wrote let ters to various German officers fighting on the Eastern front urging them to break or. Don Carnes holds a postwar photo of wehrmacht Gen. Walther von Seydlitz. Their allegiance to Hitler. He said that recent interviews with Bun Des Wehr leaders indicated that Many German officers feel that von Seydlitz s Type of opposition is a bad example for the German military. They indicated that they do not like his example of breaking his allegiance and they said they oppose his example of work ing with the enemy said Carnes. But it is necessary to Tell the von Seydlitz Story today to show germans that there were courageous men who were willing to risk everything to save the Honor and decency of their Carnes said he is very concerned with How Little German youngsters know about Hitler and what went on under the third is a danger of romanticizing Hitler. Some recent books picture Hitler As an Ordinary Leader who had no direct responsibility for the annihilation of the jews because he had not issued written orders to anyone Carnes said. None of the recent books place much emphasis on men like von Seydlitz who not Only opposed Hitler but also worked openly for his said Stalin promised the German officers who were members of the National committee for free that when they had overthrown the nazi regime Germany would be allowed to return to its Borders of 1937 and that Ger Many would be Able to form a democratic government Friendly toward the soviet Union. Carries said that Hitler forced von Seyd Litz s wife to divorce him and that Hitler sentenced von Seydlitz to death and stripped him of his rights As a German offi cer and citizen. After the july 20. Lihi at tempt on Hitler s life the nazi Leader ordered the general s wife and four Daugh ters to a concentration Camp. It was Only through the intervention of Albert Speer in december 1944 that his former wife and their daughters were re leased from the concentration Camp. When von Seydlitz returned to Ger Many in 1955, most people considered him a traitor Carnes said. The general went into seclusion and Only after a few months would he see anyone. But to the credit of the West German government he was recognized As a legitimate opponent of the nazi regime and All of his rights and Privi Leges As a former officer and a German Cit Izen were
