The birthday month began with the scouts wondering if their program would see another year. But at month s end the program s future appeared brighter than Ever. Sponsored by the local chapter of the girl scouts the Berlin Freedom recognition program was established to acquaint our girls with exactly what Berlin stands for according to Diane Price Trainer for the program leaders. During the past four years 1,966 scout visitors have come Here because of the pro Gram she said. Before travelling Here visiting girl scouts write their expectations of this walled and divided City. Some come expecting the place to still be bombed out not realizing the War was Over a Long time ago Price said. Once Here they Are Given Tours of the City and a slide briefing on its history. When they return to their Homes Back in the zone As berliners refer to West Ger Many the scouts write follow up reports comparing their impressions to their expectations. The local troop is headquartered in a Large three Story House which Karen Babineau neighbourhood troop committee chairman said was originally used by the German Luftwaffe. Until recently the girl scouts shared the House with the army Community services acs organization. When acs moved to new quarters the command told the girl scouts they might have to vacate the House. The House is important according to Babineau not Only because it s where the local girl scout troop meets but because it also doubles As a hotel for visiting scouts. The girls Are charged $1 per night to stay in the House and Babineau and Price believe the program would be seriously handicapped if visiting scouts were forced to find More expensive housing in the City. Their fears vanished when the command the local handicapped children s Organiza decided they could remain. Tion and the Berlin american women s the command recognized we were club growing Babineau said. It s great. Now we know we can Contin the girl scouts will share the House with be the program Babineau said. Cafes sales slips now will be for More than $ 75 Dallas written sales slips will now be Given Only for cafes Merchan Dise sales of More than $75 rather than the previous amount of $25, according to maj. Gen. Bobby w. Presley cafes commander. The change is based on a recent House armed services committee ruling that raised the minimum from $25, a spokesman said. Inflationary trends in recent years have substantially increased the number of individual items of Merchan Dise stocked by cafes that sell for $25 or More Presley said. The change is expected to relieve those situations in which higher sales slip volume particularly during holi Day periods has slowed customer checkouts and increased the administrative Burden to cafes of record keeping Presley said.
