This column will discuss How these individuals can reduce the health hazards they now face because they might have inhaled or Swal Lowed Asbestos health warnings frequently Are based on epidemiological or statistical studies showing that More than the usual incidence of a particular disease has occurred in certain locations or among certain individuals. In this Case research shows that heavily exposed workers employed in the industries mentioned above Are More likey to die of lung cancer and cancer of the stomach Colon oesophagus and membrane lining the Chest and study confirms aspirin May Stop strokes in men Boston up taking four aspirins Aday cuts the risk of death or crippling by stroke in half for men but not women who have had warning signs of an impending seizure the new England journal of medi Cine has reported. The study made Over six years at two dozen Canadian hospitals provides the first statistically solid evidence of the value of aspirin in preventing stroke the third leading . Killer a role for aspirin has been hinted at in recent studies but never proven. Aspirin is also under investigation As a possible Preven Tive of further heart attacks in people who have already had one. The study Means aspirin has the potential for saving thousands of lives a year from the disease which kills one in five people in Nort America and Western Europe More than any other disease except heart disease and can cer. Stroke occurs when the blood Supply to the brain is choked off either by a sudden clot or a gradual clogging of the arteries causing parts of the brain literally to die of starvation. Stroke caused disability puts More people out of work than any other disease. Nearly 2 million americans Are afflicted by stroke Sand almost 200,000 die of them every year. What aspirin apparently does is make the platelets tiny discs in the blood which cause clotting so Slippery that they can t stick to Gether and form a clot. Aspirin is safer and cheaper than anti coagulant drugs which also inhibit clotting but carry the danger of uncontrolled bleeding. The study was hailed As a major contribution in an editorial in the prestigious medi Cal journal. Or. Henry j. M. Barnett a neurologist atthe University Hospital London Ontario headed the study of 586 patients in hospitals allover Canada. The patients All had had what doctors Call transient ischaemic attacks loosely translated As mini strokes. Such mini strokes occur in one of every 1,-000 elderly americans. But major strokes happen frequently to people with no warning from a mini stroke. One group of patients was Given a Stan Dard sized aspirin Tablet four times a Day an other was Given an anti gout drug called Ang Arin. And a third was Given a Dummy Tablet. The researchers had hoped Argarin would work to prevent stroke but it did t. Nor were women helped either by Argarin or the number of subsequent major strokes or death among men who took aspirin daily was 48 per cent lower than men in the other groups. Why aspirin does t help women whose risk of stroke death is 25 per cent greater than men is perhaps the study s biggest unan swered question. Or. Barnett said the Only obvious clue is in the biggest chemical differ ence Between men and women their hormones. Even in rabbits he noted clogged arteries can be cleared somewhat in males with aspirin but not in females. In a Telephone interview Barnett cautioned that aspirin is no panacea1. People who Haven t got threatened stroke for them to Start taking tour aspirin a Day would be foolish in my opinion Barnett said. Abdominal cavities. In addition Asbestos workers Are More Likely to develop asbestosis a disease that causes shortness of breath an permanent damage to the lungs. Heavily exposed workers who Are still i Contact with Asbestos should avoid further exposure by using protective equipment another available safety measures. Exposed individuals including their families and those who no longer work with Asbestos should have regular checkups and Tell their physicians about their occupational histories. They should make sure the physical examination includes a Chest a Ray lung function test and rectal important exposed individuals should Stop smoking because Asbestos workers who smoke Are eight times More Likely to develop lung cancer than non Asbestos workers who smoke. In addition anybody who might have Bee exposed to Asbestos should see a physician immediately if any of the following symptom appear shortness of breath especially on exer Tion cough or change in cough pattern blood in the fluid coughed up from the lungs Chest or abdominal pain difficulty swallowing or prolonged hoarseness sudden Large weight sobering facts underlie these health warnings. The risk of Asbestos related disease increases with amount of exposure and length of time of exposure. Only a month or two of exposure May still Lead to Asbestos related disease. And those who Are exposed May no show signs of disease for 30 years or longer. Thus Lack of symptoms now does not mean disease will not occur in the future. The ear Lier the disease is detected the sooner lifesaving treatment can begin. For example most deaths from asbestosis Are caused by lung infections that usually respond to Early medical these health care measures Asbestos workers should make sure employers us proper protective equipment and safety procedures.
