European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - August 28, 1978, Darmstadt, Hesse Page 10 the stars and stripes monday August 28, 1973 to Corner today we switch from cars to bikes for a change with the following report on the japanese Suzuki is Ioco prepared by Jim Coles Iii a Cycle enthusiast who has done previous tests for this column. In his re port. Coles gives the Suzuki Bike High Marks in general. Randy Barm ill by Jim Coles in staff writer for a person who likes machines few things please him More than a machine that runs exactly right and that s what Suzuki s gs-1000 Bike tested was one of Suzuki of Germany s distributor executive models. It had about 750 Miles on it and had received Only Normal care As prescribed by the owner s manual. One thousand cubic centimetres of Dis placement makes for a huge engine a Large As some car engines. The engine is the Bike s main physical feature yet it is pleasing to look at As part of the Over All Structure of the machine. The Bike itself is All Long and wide and seems to say ride and gauges Are nicely arranged to functional easy to use and read clusters. This Bike had the optional cafe racer Type bars on it which to an old straight up touring rider Felt very strange at first. But the ban soon Felt comfortable though not natural. The seating position created by the Low bars is a Little awkward for City Riding but is very Nice for Highway cruising though i still prefer straight up Riding. Chopper style pull Back bars would Correct that problem nicely. The shocks Are indicative of the innovative thinking Suzuki has put into this machine. Standard equipment suspension on this Bike is by Way of air shocks. These area great Deal like the so freon shocks except they Are infinitely adjustable less expensive to replace and should t need re placement until Well past 35.000 Miles. I suspect other new bikes have air shocks now but these Are the first factory jobs i be seen. I like pm. Workmanship on welds paint Chrome plating and casting is of the highest order. Nowhere does shoddy workmanship show its ugly head. Even the american made mag wheels seem to blend very nicely with the Over All Quality and aesthetics of the seat is wide and Long. Long enough to carry two adults in Comfort. If it were my Bike though i d replace the seat with a Saddle Type High backed touring seat. With the factory seat there is no Lumbar support at All even in the cafe position. I give it Only an average rating. Balanced Block one of the big problems on All Piston engine bikes is vibration but Suzuki seems to have beaten that pretty Well with its factory Blu printed engine balanced Block Pis tons crankshaft and super smooth cams. The touring Range at 80 Mph on this Bike is about 130 Miles but even after this Dis Tance hands and feet still Don t Tingle the Back is remarkably refreshed and the in cards not turned into soup. I get the feeling that a 500-mile Day would be a snap on this machine especially with a fairing and straight up Riding accessories. The transmission shifter and clutch As Sembly is the tried and proven Suzuki 5 Speed. It is a Silky smooth flawless set up. Effortless hand and foot action results in a new from Bow the new and super ast Bow s35 Sci coup above completes the Bow f series Range adding to the pm is and 633 Sci. The new cd the fastest 4 seater production coup made in Ger Many is powered by a Ontl injected f very Nice thunk when you hit your next gear. That is the solid reliable sound of a Suzi tranny. Precise response japanese bikes were Long known As straight line bikes reference Kawasaki s of 500 he. The Kawasaki 750 two strokes and Suzuki s Gt-750 water cooled two stroke. Those bikes now either de ceased or much modified and improved Over their Early 70s ancestors still leave something to be desired in the handling Field. Not so the gs-1000. It is not a Bike for the casual rider. This machine features precise immediate response to Corners curves straight roads anything you want to subject it to. At first i thought this deceptively easy to ride machine was another of those straight line bikes. Everything is Laid out the Suzuki gs-1000 from Japan Cylinder in line engine of parity. A five Speed Geairn with the Bow going from to Miles per Hoar of 7j m Speed for the sports act tit 149 Mph Range neatly everything operates wtfe4i0kease. I figured this had to be a tasty tic but How wrong i was this Bike operates so smooth i age sized woman could ride to bit Man s machine in every Way i whisper soft Bass exhaust song Icho. Acceleration is by even my timid throttle to to 60 Mph acceleration in and ones and that did t Strain this Tiger while acceleration is Spe " touring strength of this eng me the most.
