Weese who replaced starting Quarter Back Craig Morton at the end of the third period scrambled out of trouble and hit Riley odoms with a 13-Yard pass to the Minnesota 27. He connected with Rich up Church on a 12-yarder and Otis Armstrong then gained 21 Yards on three carries touring the Ball Down to the 1-Yard line. Jon Keyworth bulled Over from the 1 forthe touchdown with 6 40 remaining in the game but Alan Page then blocked the con version attempt by Jim Turner. The Vikings took the second half kickoff44 Yards to set up Danmeier s second Field goal. Fran Tarkenton hit Sammy Whit with a pass which bounced off the hands of running Back Rickey Young for a 13-Yardgain to the Denver 34 to highlight the drive. Minnesota cornerback Nate Wright intercepted a Morton pass intended for Haven Moses and returned it 28 Yards tothe Denver 27 Midway through the third period. Two Denver penalties and Short continued on Page 24 Broncos monday night before a National television audience. At this Point i m just worried about winning and i Don t care How said Boston manager Don Zimmer after Rice s 40th Homer of the year gave the red sox a half game Lead Over the Idle Yankees. It s been a struggle to win just one game said Zimmer while Rice was Quick to Point out it will be a struggle to keep winning. We can t let up for the next 19  said Rice who need t have mentioned that without Strong performances in those contests there will be no games beyond that for the red sox. I was t looking for Home runs said the slugger whose career Best had been 39 until monday night. But the wind was blowing out and i tried to get the Ball up in the  Rice nearly homered in the first when his drive off Fenway Park s left Field Wall just missed going Over. That was a Home run in Baltimore and probably every place else said orioles manager Earl Weaver. Instead. Rice settled for a single on that play a sixth inning Homer and his game Winner on Joe Kerri Gan s first pitch of the eighth. Rice Zimmer said simply is some thing  that too will be duly noted at contract time. In the other Al games Kansas City clubbed Oakland 7-2, Texas blanked Cali fornia 1-0, Milwaukee trimmed Seattle 5-3, Minnesota nipped Chicago 3-1, and Cleve land beat Toronto 6-4 before losing 7-1. Weaver had expressed concern that bos ton s anguish Over losing would cause Trou ble for his orioles. Elsewhere in the my Montreal s Ross no Roundup Grimsley had a perfect game for 7 1-3 innings in the expos 3-1 Victory Over St. Louis the Chicago cubs beat the Newyork mets 9-4 Cincinnati edged Houston 9 8 and Atlanta bested san Diego 7-2.pirates manager Chuck Tanner in t ready to give up the Chase not with 18games left including five More with Phila Delphia. We can t throw in the Towel said Tanner whose pirates won 21 of 23 games to climb Back into the East race. Any body who does is a quitter. We still got a Chance. We be just got to win More game than they  Pittsburgh started off Well against Stev Carlton getting three runs and seven hits in three innings. Willie Stargell had a two run Homer in the third but Carlton limited continued on Page 23
