On March 5 i visited the Frankfurt main shopping Center s class i store. I made one Purchase of 10 packs of the famous German bitter called Underberg. I normally look at the Price on the shelf to see if it is holding and then order 10 packs from the cashier. This Lime i did t look at the shelf Price and you can imagine How i fell As i went to pay the Normal Cost of $9 or 90 cents per three bottle pack. The lady at the Register said that will be Sis yes. $15 instead of $9, a 60 percent Price hike. And that at a time when the Good old Dollar was gaining almost daily on the German Money Market. Underberg is locally procured. I asked the manager if the hike could be a mistake. He was very helpful and showed me a paragraph in a bulletin pertaining to the Price changes. After Reading i must say i was somewhat confused. The manager and i both agreed that the bulletin did not directly explain or mention anything on my Underberg problem. I asked the manager if he could assist me any further and he recommended that i return and talk with the area manager who would be there the next Day. I met him and asked if he could Supply me with the name and address of the Agency responsible for the class i stores. He supplied me with the name and address of a or. William a agric at the Usa eur class i Agency. T called him the following Day and had a very bad connection so i failed to understand his Short explanation. However i did hear loud and Clear when he said the Price of Underberg will go Down to sij5 per three bottle pack on March 16. What caused the 60-percent increase during the one month period and what is causing the Price to go Back Down my Bottom line is that i still have my sales slip for March 5 showing the Sis Pur Chase. I hereby respectfully request that All customers who purchased Underberg Dur ing that month and still have their sales slips be refunded the difference in Price. Name withheld Frankfurt Germany editor s note Harold d. Simp son director Usa eur class i Agency replies the customer has a legitimate complaint which we hopefully can clarify. In february 1980, a new common markup formula was implemented in All usar eur end Safe class i stores. As a result certain foreign products dropped significantly in Price to Levels More closely aligned to . Product prices. A few continent products prices which had been held Down under a Dod regulated formula increased in Price. Under this new Structure prices found to exceed local Economy prices were adjusted below Domestic prices. When the Price disparity on Underberg was brought to our munition on March 4, we in flailed Surrey of local Economy prices and after confirming that our Price was in fact Abote the Economy Price. It was reduced from $130 to . Our appreciation b expressed to the writer of the Tetter Ami others who brought this matter to our attention. However the original $1.50 Price was Correct based on the new pricing formula. The customers were not overcharged and a refund is not appropriate. We regret any inconvenience caused to buyers of under Berg and Hope that they Are again among our Many satisfied customers car exports to Japan an article appeared on Page 2 of your april 13 edition spelling out the main Rea son Why american cars exported to Japan fare so badly. To expect american cars to be sold in Japan at a competitive Price when americans make no Effort to conform to japanese standards prior to being exported is pure economic stupidity. If the japanese can conform to Federal emission and safety standards when they reach our shores can we do less than con form to theirs we cannot expect to be granted concessions simply because we re americans or the Good old .a. I wonder if the United Stales has a Previ Ous Export program for our cars at All. We have the audacity to attempt to sell . Cars in count Iris such As Japan England and Australia but Don t have the Courtesy to build right hand drive steering which would increase the desirability of the cars to the general Public. If we bunt our cars to conform to Japa Nese standards at the manufacturing Plant it would undoubtedly Lessen the amount of bureaucratic red tape and costs when the cars Are imported in Japan. If we re not going to make an honest Effort to make our cars competitive in foreign markets we ought to Stop griping about the imports and place the blame squarely where it belongs on Detroit and the . Government. To set. Janus r. Oliver Raf Lakenheath England i pen pals we would Llhee to War from pen pal. Tver where. Emt Frlj m. Lug Illman Myrna b. A Turr Cajon Anaclito m. Mca1bo
