A spokesman for the major league baseball players association the Union rep resenting the 650 major leagues said if a testing program were negotiated it would be highly unrealistic to believe it could be done by the oct. 19 world series. Ueberroth tuesday bypassed the Union and sent a letter to each player asking him to agree to voluntary drug testing three times a season. Players on most teams declined an out right endorsement of Ueberroth s proposal asking instead that the matter be negotiated through their Union. In a statement released thursday the commissioner said his Appeal sparked wide spread agreement from the players on three Points the players want to clean up their image. The players believe a drug testing pro Gram is a viable solution and arc willing to cooperate. The players insist on Union representation in the  m very pleased with the response the commissioner said. It is Clear the players will support a drug testing program and i completely understand their desire to work through the players association.
