Vision Correct no Eye surgery Nof a i if s Cut out to be researchers report san Francisco up Surpris ing study results for a controversial opera Tion to Correct car sightedness May Dampen some of the enthusiasm for the surgery undergone by 100,000 americans the head of the research team reported sunday. The key finding at the end of the second year of follow up of 435 patients was that one third of them suffered visual fluctuations Long after their eyes were expected to heal from the surgery said or. George Waring ophthalmology professor at Emory University in Atlanta. But some initial reports of car taillights taking on a glaring starlike appearance and other fluctuations following the procedure called radial Kera Toomy were expected to diminish with time. Our most important finding was thai about one third of the patients still had fluctuating vision during the second year. This is a big problem Waring reported at the annual meeting of the american acad Emy of ophthalmology. We were surprised that in fact the Cor Nea May take two to three years to heal in some the results of the prospective evaluation of radial Kera Toomy or perk study seemed at least in part to support critics who have questioned the reliability predictability and Long term Side effects of the operation. The study funded by the National Eye Institute was the first major examination of the microsurgical procedure to Correct myopia or nearsightedness suffered by 11 million americans. The researchers also found the outcome of a second radial Kera Toomy performed on patients who did not respond fully to the first surgery was much less predictable than the results of the initial operation. In addition in one fourth of those who underwent the operation in both eyes the results differed significantly for each Eye causing asymmetric vision. Although the surprising results Certai. By do not mean the procedure is worthless they do Dampen some of the enthusiasm Waring Sakl in an interview. The Bottom line is that whereas in 1980 we thought the operation was experimental we Don t think it s experimental anymore but it is definitely in its developing phase and needs to be refined so the outcome is More predictable and safer in the Long in radial Kera Toomy the theory of which was espoused As Early As the late 1800s and the modern version of which was first performed in the United states in 1978 the surgeon uses a Diamond tipped knife to slice into the Cornea.
