European Stars and Stripes (Newspaper) - December 28, 1985, Darmstadt, Hesse Saturday december 28, 1985 the stars and stripes Ann Landers Page 11 letters dear Ann Landers i m male 29, and in one Heck of a spot with a female Friend. No Romance just a very Good pal Dianne invited me to dinner at her parents Home. Know them Well and like them a lot. Dianne s kid sister Janice is getting married and i have been invited to the wedding. Now for the com scr. Between the soup and the salad Janice asked me to video tape her wedding. I told her sorry the reason i am a rank Amateur and would be terrified of the responsibility. If i goofed it up i d never be Able to forgive myself. Janice became furious and screamed what kind of Friend Are you anyway her Mother chimed in we know you Aren t a professional but you Lake wonder Ful then Dianne ripped me up one Side and Down the other for not being a True Friend. You just Don t want to be bothered she screamed. You Are letting everybody in the family after being attacked by everyone pre sent i got up from the table and left the House without saying goodbye or thanks for supper. It s been two weeks and i have received no apology from anyone. If i Don t hear from Dianne before the wedding i la As sume we Are no longer friends and i shall not attend. Was 1 wrong to refuse to video tape the event was i wrong to leave As i did would it be a mistake to pass up the wed Ding please advise. My head is in a mud dle. Friendship kaput in Long Island dear kaput you had every right o refuse to video tape the wedding. However you should not have bolted from the table and left in a Huff. If you want to sever ill ties with Dianne and her family Don t attend the wedding. On the other hand if Ibe Friendship is something you value you d better put in an appearance and Hope for the Best. Dear Ann Landers i am a teen who needs an important question answered. As you know theseas alcohol and drugs arc very popular in High school. I drink booze and smoke pot not a lot but whenever 1 feel like it. I be also tried cocaine and acid. This is nothing unusual. All my friends do it. The question i m asking is this am i in danger of getting in Over my head or is this just a to can a phase that will pass my friends suy it is something All kids go through. I am not addicted to any thing. Pot and booze arc fun. When things get Dull it s a great Way to break the Monotony. I m sure i could live with out the stuff. Any advice fan in Jacksonville dear Jack the fact that you ask these questions indicates a measure of uncertainty. You Are Wise to wonder if you Are getting in Over your head. I d say if you Aren t already hooked you will be soon. Users have a tendency to escalate the intake and before they know it they Are addicted. Quit playing with dynamite. Throw out All the junk and be through with it forever. It would be the Best present you could give yourself. I can t Tell you How Many teens hate written to say they d give anything if they had t gotten mined up with drugs and alcohol. If it is True that you can choose for heaven s Sake choose to be free of those deadly seducers. Reader opposes subsidized Sale of liquor tobacco i favor the present proposal in the Senate o end the subsidies on the Sale of liquor and tobacco products on military installations. The Sale of subsidized liquor in class i stores subverts the air Force s vigorous Campaign against Drunken driving As it does not support the Campaign with appropriate financial incentives. Casting All altruistic pronouncements to the contrary aside the history of Man s 6,000-Ycar stewardship Over this planet has proven conclusively that people respond More readily to Money than to any other incentive. If you raise the Price of liquor people will tend to buy less consume less and subsequently be less intoxicated when operating a motor vehicle. In t that the objective the same analogy is somewhat applicable to tobacco products. Cigarettes have been shown to have no socially redeeming value. But if i had to pay British prices for cigarettes i would quit smoking tomorrow. This is yet More proof that where moral suasion leaves off financial suasion picks up. I also wish to cite some additional tertiary benefits of eliminating the subsidies elimination of subsidies would reduce Federal expenditures one Small step to Ward reducing the Federal deficit. In overseas military installations. There would be no need to ration these items if they weren t subsidized. Consequently ration cards could be eliminated and with the corresponding reduction in paperwork. The military could concentrate More on its Basic Mission to fight. In the overseas environment any pre sent Black Market potential for tobacco and alcohol however Small it May be would most Likely be totally eliminated. Fewer medical Legal and social prob lems among military personnel is probably the strongest Selling Point. Incidentally i am not a prohibitionist. I smoke a pack and a half of cigarettes daily and consume approximately two bottles of wine monthly on the average so i am put Ling my Money where my Mouth is so to speak. I Challenge others to do likewise by examining this proposal on the basis of its merits rather than boo hoping about hav ing to pay More for their favorite Poison. You can t totally enslave yourself to the desires of the flesh without paying the Price and by virtue of its anti Drunken driving Campaign the air Force has shown that it s tired of paying the Price. Tech. Sgt. Carl j. La chs Raf Mildenhall England . Protesters Aren t paying the Price says Reader a recent stars and stripes reported that anti apartheid protesters in Washington ., celebrated a year of unlawful daily protests outside the South african embassy with another major rally. The leaders of the demonstration included the Rev. Jesse Jackson and Washington mayor Marion Barry. Several protesters according to the up Story were handcuffed and driven away in a Paddy Wagon. They were arrested for demonstrating within 500 feet of a for eign embassy. One s first reaction might be admiration for principled individuals who Are willing to go to jail for expressing their moral outrage at South Africa in an illegal manner. How Ever the Story omits the fact that demonstrators arrested outside the South african embassy pay no Fine and Are promptly re leased without a police record. Perhaps because mayor Barry is among the protesters the anti apartheid movement gets special consideration. Whatever the Case these people who liken themselves to the civil rights activists of the 60s, Are try ing to acquire Superior Mobil arc denials on the cheap. There is an important distinction be tween those Brave protesters of the 60s and these anti apartheid charlatans. Jackson Barry and the rest of these self appointed moralists arc making no sacrifice display ing no courage when icy break the Law it requires no moral courage to break a Law when there is no penalty. Once the daily circus outside the South african embassy proved a risk free Ven Ture the number of celebrities and politicians with social consciences grew until it seemed All of Hollywood and Washington society must be crawling aboard the brow beat South Africa movement. In contrast to the publicity hounds stalk ing the South african embassy 49 genuinely Brave people were arrested outside the soviet embassy on nov. 17 for protesting soviet restrictions on jewish emigration. Odds arc these people were not released As As their counterparts Down the Road. Don t censor music parents told i am a 17-year-old and i have a few things to get off my mind. Lately All i be been hearing is How bad Rock is for the kids nowadays. Come on give me a break. You adults had your time. The 1980s is our generation. What i Don t understand is How the parents can say that our songs Are bad for us when they listen to just about the same thing. Maybe they Don t listen to Rock. But country has a few songs that the parents Are against such As morning desire by Kenny Rogers. You people Don t have to listen to the music. We Don t criticize your music so of of have no right to criticize ours. Remmer that old saying think before you it applies Here too. Think before you say anything about our music because you people listen to just about the same thing Only with different music. I m not criticizing the Way you adults think. But think about your kids As you Call them. It s even worse if you censor our music. Most of the kids who listen to that Type of music arc at least Between the Ages of is and 18, so i think they arc old enough to handle the music. Name withheld Hanau Germany Bonn Reader applauds smoke out the ninth annual smoke out in which millions of smokers tried to Stop or Cut Down on smoking is a great event. It seems to help so Many people quit smoking or know that they can try and not smoke As much. The article on the smoke out shows Many ways in which you could Stop. For example eating ice Cream or Licking a Lollipop while wailing for your 24 hours to expire without a cigarette. One of my friends tried it by Only having one cigarette and then going without any More until Midnight when his time was up. All his friends seemed to be experiencing the pain of trying to quit with him since he was around us and was in a very bad mood All Day. Even though Only 19.7 million out of 55 million and maybe More smokers tried to quit i feel that this is a great idea. It gives so Many people who arc smokers courage to try and Stop. Even though they might Nave not tried on that thursday to quit it starts them thinking very strongly about quitting and next time they might try with the others. There is no Justice in this double Stan Dard practice by Washington authorities. The police in our capital City should uniformly enforce the Law and Send a signal to activist lawbreakers like Jackson that if they want to Massage their consciences with moralizing antics outside a foreign embassy they must pay the Price with imprison ment and a criminal record. -2nd it.
