European Stars And Stripes (Newspaper) - March 27, 1986, Darmstadt, Hesse Thursday March 27, 1986 stars and stripes Page 19 commentary a Chip shot toward the Mcaa title Duke guard Johnny Dawkins can get his shot anytime he Kansas Forward Danny Manning is the Best All around player in the country not the Best player but the Best All around Louisville has the most Talent and Louisiana state Forward John Williams is As great an individual Talent As anybody in the final four that will gather at re Union Arena in Dallas saturday for the National collegiate athletic association semifinals. Those assessments come from Marty Blake the National basketball association s scouting director. Through the years his projection of immediate or even Tual first round draft choices from the final four often created a familiar formula the team with the most Blue Chip players will win the Mcaa title. That formula did t prove out in last year s championship game. Villanova with Only one projected Blue Chipper in de Pinckney now of the Phoenix suns stunned Georgetown which had five Blue chippers notably Patrick Ewing now the kicks ailing Center. But if the formula holds this year monday night s championship game looms As a tossup Between Duke and Louisville each with three projected Blue Chip players. Duke has Dawkins 6-foot-8-Inch Forward Mark Ala Rie and 6-10 freshman Forward Danny ferry. Louisville has 6-9 Center Pervis Ellison Billy Thompson and Mil Wagner. Kansas has two sure first round choices All Ameri Ca Manning a Sophomore Forward and Greg Dreiling the senior Center. The Jay Hawks also have two players Likely to be second round choices if not late first round choices 6-6 guard Calvin Thompson and 6-5 Forward Ron Kellogg. If the final four team with Only one Blue Chipper were to win this time As Villanova did a year ago it would be leu with Williams its 6-8 Forward. As the Surprise team of the final four the tigers go to Dallas with successive upsets of Memphis state Georgia tech Dave Andersen and Kentucky. Louisville has three potential first round choices Blake said. Their Center Pervis Ellison is Only a freshman but he plays much bigger than his height. When he comes out in three years he will go very very High in the first round. And then there Are the two seniors who will be first round choices this year Thompson the 6-7 Forward and Wagner the 6-5guard. In this year s tournament Thompson has played As Well As anybody. He s a Good player who s playing for a coach Denny Crum who turns out Good players. Wag Ner is a big guard who can handle the Ball who s a very Good passer and who can Cut off the passing lanes on defense. Louisville s got Guys who can really run. They be got nine Guys who were considered Blue Chip prospects coming out of High against that array of Louisville Talent Wil Liams will try to help leu create another upset. Had John declared for the Aba draft two years ago several teams would have taken him Blake said. Last year i thought John played to half his ability especially on the Road. This year he had the Chicken pox Early but now he s leu s Premier player. He can play outside he can handle the Ball he can rebound. He s what i Call a big time player. Danny s the first 6-11 player who probably could play every position. Not that he s going to be a pro guard but he could be. He might be the no. 1 Choice in two years. The thing about him is that when Kansas needed him against North Carolina state in the mid West regional final sunday he took Over the game. Dreiling is a certain first Rounder this year. At 7-1, Leibrandt eased up won in 85 fort Myers Fla. A according to what Charlie Leibrandt has come to Dis cover it s not so much what a Pitcher throws but where he s Able to throw it. The Kansas City royals left hander a member of baseball s Best Young staff proved that last year. Despite his Lack of blazing Speed he carved out the Best season of his career and has no reason to believe it won t be More of the same in 1986. I can t really pinpoint any one thing the 29-year-old Pitcher said of his Emer gence last summer As one of the american league s Premier performers. I just gained a whole lot of Confidence in the last year last year and a half he said. I really Felt Good about myself. I m real comfortable every time i take if Leibrandt is at ease the same cannot be said of batters attempting to dig in at Home plate against his assortment of four frequently tantalizing deliveries. Since returning May 30, 1984, from the minor leagues he has compiled a 28-16 record. Last year his earned run average 2.69, was second among Al Mounds men. Not even hard Luck he encountered in the world series could detract from a 17-9 Campaign As witnessed by the $770,000 contract he was awarded for 1986 through salary arbitration. The turning Point for Leibrandt occurred two years ago when he started the year with Omaha of the american association the top Kansas City farm club. There he compiled a 7-1 record with a 1.24 Era throwing three shutouts among four Complete games in nine starts. It he runs the court decently he s a Good outlet passer and he s a great Hook shooter. The Hook shot is the Only unstoppable shot in basketball but hardly any body takes it anymore. But this kid takes it. And he makes of those expected to be Early choices in this year s Aba draft Dawkins is the Only one on a final fou team. If the draft were tomorrow Blake said Brad Daugherty the North Carolina Center would probably be the first Choice. But there s Kenny Walker of Ken Tucky Len Bias of Maryland Chuck person of a Burn Del Curry of Virginia tech and Dawkins plus maybe Walter Berry of St. John s and whoever else might decide to come out Early. Dawkins has great Speed and quickness. Because of that he s one of the few who can get his shot anytime he wants. He reminds me of Lenny Blake should know. Once the general Man Ager of the St. Louis Hawks he drafted Wilkens just As he once drafted Bob ferry now the Washington bullets general manager and the father of Danny ferry the Duke freshman who comes off the Bench. Duke s big Forward Mark Alarie is another sure first Rounder this year. He s a hard worker who can shoot the stationary jumper and who knows How to position himself. Some people say he can t do this or he can t do that. But let s look at what a Guy can do. And what this kid can do is play with heart he s a very Good jump shooter and hell Battle you. The other Duke Forward David Henderson should be an Early second round Choice. Good solid As for which team in Dallas will succeed Villanova As the Mcaa Champion Blake would not say. But he seemed to like Louisville s chances. Louisville has the most Talent he said and Good the new York times up photo royals Charlie Leibrandt. Knows where to throw the Ball served As a springboard for an 11-7 record with the royals that secured his major league status. Leibrandt whose pitching assortment includes an obligatory fastball to go with a curve Ball change up and Slider says Success has brought with it relaxation. Probably the biggest thing that i be done is that i be been Able to control All my pitches he said. I be got to get ahead and make the Batter hit my pitch. That s the Type of Pitcher i last season Leibrandt whose career started in the National league with the Cincinnati reds started 33 times and worked 237 innings. He registered eight Complete games three of them shutouts and struck out 108 to go with 65 unintentional walks. His statistics which ranked second Only to by Young Winner Bret Saberhagen s on Kan Sas City s staff helped royals pitchers As semble collectively a 3.49 Era. This Spring Leibrandt pretty much took up where he left off in 1985 by permitting opposing batsmen Only five hits and striking out 10 without a walk during three outings covering 11 innings. Football team May figure in Irsay divorce Chicago a a judge tuesday ruled that the Indianapolis Colts of the National football league owned by Robert Irsay could be considered As part of any settlement in divorce proceedings Between Irsay and his wife of 38 years. Circuit court judge Aubrey Kaplan granted a petition by Irsay s wife Harriet to make the football team a third party defendant in the divorce Case. Attorneys for Irsay had moved to dismiss mrs. Irsay s petition to make the team a party in the Case. Joseph Ducanto one of Irsay s attorneys contended after the hearing that the judge acted too hastily and did not consider Irsay s Side of the Issue. Kaplan who previously had barred Irsay from Selling the potential assets of the Cou ple said he was concerned that Irsay had made financial transactions involving the Colts that could affect a potential divorce property settlement. He said the Colts had purchased a $1.5 million piece of real estate for training entertainment and housing related to the foot Ball team and that the Colts organization had loaned Irsay $11 million. Meanwhile mrs. Irsay who filed for divorce last August is receiving More than $20,000 a month in support payments. In previous court appearances Irsay s attorneys had argued against adding the foot Ball team to the Case. If Harriet Irsay did t like the draft choices she could petition the court to con duct the affairs of the football team which is absurd to say the least argued Charles Fleck another attorney for Irsay. Irsay moved the Colts to Indianapolis from Baltimore in March 1984
