Numbers like 692 and 604. Numbers like 2393 and 2311. The latter figures belong to Furth s Rich Hirata and Barry Home. That pair teamed to Post the largest number with the 2311 figure belonging to Ramstein s duo of Mike Smith and Randy Corey. The big numbers translate into a Tough position in the doubles event. Whether those figures remain big enough won t be known until Early next week when another group of bowlers take to the Bicentennial lanes in search of Cash prizes and berths in the annual european masters championship. During the first three shifts of doubles action Friday the bowlers contrasted sharply with the hot steamy atmosphere inside the 32-Lane facility Here. The heat Gener ated by the bowlers reflects the weather not the Competition. After three shifts the top score was Only 2300. That belonged to Baum older s Bruce Miles and Dave Crl who turned in respective six game sets of 1136 and 1164. While a late storm had moved in to Coo things off Hirata and Home did their Besto heal things up. After a mediocre Start the pair turned up the thermometer with 600-plus series Over the final six games to finish 93 pins ahead of the . Hornc and Hirata chose different paths in turning things around. It s funny How things worked out said Home Bowling in his first All Star tournament. Rich went to a harder Ball and i went to a softer  that s right said Hirata who hails from Molokai Hawaii. Barry was using an outside line and i was going inside. But unlike other double teams who had moved within striking distance the Fuerth duo came up with the big numbers in the final game. This is my third All Star tournament and i know there s a lot Osgood bowlers who Haven t even started yet. I m Happy with our doubles score. I just Hope it holds  Hirata will have to wait until monday night to find out if he and Hornc own the doubles title. Two More shifts of doubles bowlers took  at their total later Friday and six shifts of bowlers will do like Wise monday. Smith and Corey bowled on the same shift As Hornc and Hirata but came up 82 Sticks of the Fuerth pair. Smith who leads the masters qualifying race had series of 616 and 579 for 1195. Corey shot 1116 with series of 538 and 578. Vog Cloch s John Colby and Allan Hix son held Down the fourth spot with 2299. Ironically Toivonen and Crysto were killed exactly one year to the Day after an other top Lancia Driver Italy s Attilio Bel Toga was killed in a crash during the tour of Corsica. Toivoncn had been rallying since 1975 and had three world championship Victo Ries the British Rac in 1980 driving a Talbot the British Rac again last year for Lancia and Monte Carlo at the begin Ning of this season. He also won the finnish rally championship in 1975. Toivoncn s Victory for Lancia in this year s Monte Carlo rally was especially noteworthy As he drove at least half of it with an injured leg after his Lancia was hit by another car at High Speed. Toivonen got his damaged car Back to the Lancia repair station and kept going driving years for the masters tourney leads the Field for the 36 bowlers who will compete following the wac tournament. Three shifts of teams will try to dethrone the Poorboy sunday. The Simbach  racked up 4507 to finish 28 pins behind the Poorboy. Neil Sanford led the Way with 1254, which included a 253 game and a 654 series. Recce Louderback had 1128, Joey Killcy 1074 and Jack Moilanen 1051. Sembach s tigers tallied 4502 to move into third. Pete Russell s 1197 paced the quartet. John Lopez finished with 1135, Pete Allen had 1095 and Tony Martinez had 1075. The rest of the rally with a car that was never up to Par.
