Although my initial experience As one of the first overseas dependents was my arrival in Tokyo Japan in Early 1947 after sailing from Seattle with my two younger Brothers and 27 pieces of Luggage want to comment on my second experience As an army brat in the Early 1950s in Germany when it was Muchmore pleasant to live in Europe. We flew a prop Mac flight from Mcguire fab to Rhym main a in april 1954, then connected with a rain to Salzburg Austria where we arrived on easter sunday in the Middle of a Spring snowstorm we lived in what is now the three Star Bristol hotel then moved out to a charming Little House on the Obertini Mersey about 30 minutes from Salzburg. I finished the sixth Grade in the converted stables of n Schloss near Salzburg. When the american occupation of Austria ended later in 1954, my father a warrant officer in the army Security Agency was transferred to bad sibling about 50 Miles South of Munich. We lived in a Beautiful appropriated House in Ros Conheim in comparative luxury while we were awaiting completion of bad sibling s government housing. Our Grade school was now located about 30-sorae Miles Southwest of Rosen Heim in a tiny Village called Nuss Dorf just off the Highway into Kun std Austria. I visited my former Grade school in Nussdorf this past Christmas and it is now an orphanage and Little changed from school year 1954-1955 my eighth Grade teacher miss Greany has retired from teaching and lives near Rhein Mam a we be kept in touch All these years our school on Post at bad sibling eventually opened and when i graduated from the eighth Grade i had to join Munich Grade school As i was the Only student in my class my first year of High school was in Munich As a dorm student a Small army bus would pick up about six of us Al bad sibling housing area every Sun Day evening and bring us Back from school every Fri Day afternoon. I Learned to ski in bad sibling on special services wooden skis on the Hill across from the housing area those skis were incredibly Long but we just strapped them onto our regular Snow boots with leather straps clumsily careening Down the slope try no to control skis mean for adults. We would frequently visit Lake Chick Sec recreation Center hotel and in inc Winter the Flagstone Patio off the main lobby would be flooded for ice skat ing. In summer months we would play miniature Golf in front of the hotel. When i visited Lake Chi Rosce hotel again this past Christmas i asked if the Patio is still used for ice skating and sadly it in t. Our meals Al Lake Chiem Sce hotel were very formal affairs the six of us would put on our sunday Best and drive Down to Lake Chicks be for special occasion Din ners. A three piece combo of German musicians usually a piano violin and base fiddle would play softly in the background and were usually willing to play requests from a Gawky 12-year-old Methe dining room at Lake Chiem Sce hotel is basically the same today although the furnishings in the 1950s were different. Now i be spent about 17-plus years in Europe but my childhood years will always be the most special ones. We hear so Many negative things in this world we live in but my wife and i wish to thank Cooney s car Center and i staff and the Heilbronn cafes Auto repair manager and personnel for outstanding work and Loving concern for our welfare. I just want to say this i be worn the uniform pre War during the War and postwar including my retire ment time to Date. As far As i m concerned there is no medical service anywhere that can compare to that offered by our entire medical corps. Surgeons doctors nurses and Alt the enlisted personnel male and female arc a dedicated Well trained and efficient unit. I was never a sick Call runner hut did need the services of those wonderful people. I Hope with these few lines i can say a Heartfelt thank you to All of those people who took care of me when i needed their care and skills. Working in acs it always seems that the coi gets picked for All sorts of details and Odd Job from his unit and does t get rewarded for the Good Job that he has done for his or her Community. I telephoned his wife at Home and asked her to Call and Tell him. She thanked me and made the Call at once. Or. Is desk is next to mine. I heard him say you re right but How in the h did you know within a few seconds he figured it out and we had a Good laugh. He thanked me profusely and i Felt that i had done my Good deed for the Day. I know i did. I followed your advice a few weeks later and came off smelling like a Rose. Since then i be applied the Ann Landers class and dignity admonition to other areas of my life. Ii has extended to waiting patiently in supermarket lines and snarled traffic facing sour clerks and other challenges we arc called upon to face every Day.
