July 4, 19s8 the stars and stripes pg1f letters Dodds defends its 7-period school Day this letter is in response to your interest and that of the stars and stripes readers concerning the adoption of a seven period master schedule for cycling classes in the department of defense dependents schools High schools with senior classes. These schools Are accredited by the North Central association of colleges and schools inc which re quins secondary schools to Grant credits in Carnegie units for courses taken. A Carnegie unit is the amount of credit Given for the successful completion of a course which meets 40 min utes daily j Days a week for at least 16 weeks or 120 clock hours within the school year. Regardless of How the school year is structured and regardless of the Dura Tion of the course offerings textbooks other educational materials and cum Cular systems Are designed for use within the 120-Tlock-hour Carnegie unit requirement. With hot fact in mind and with our review of the findings and recommendations in the report a nation at risk from the National commission on excellence in education it was decided to increase Dodds graduation requirements and instructional time availability to be consistent with changes occur ring in major school systems in the United states. During the november 1984 Dodds regional directors meeting the number of Carnegie credit units required for graduation from Dodds High schools was increased from 18 to 20. This increase included an additional required unit in mathematics one unit in Laboratory science and one half unit in computer Sci ence. Analysis also showed that it was feasible to in crease course availability by scheduling for seven Peri ods. The seven period Day and the 45-Minule period of instruction five minutes More than that required for the Carnegie unit Are not at All unusual in fact the Yare commonly used in school systems throughout toe United states and Canada. Also they Are nol new to the Dodds system Dodds High schools have had master schedules with seven periods rotating periods and Days modular periods and combinations of these for several years. The seven period schedule provides students More options flexibility in course selection More periods to meet the new graduation requirements and a limited use of study periods providing tutorial services for those who have nol achieved Mastery. The formal for scheduling seven periods b deter mined locally by each High school and is based upon regional guidance and the composition of the school and Community factors. Each secondary school Princi pal is responsible for developing and implementing seven period master schedule that ensures the school maintains accreditation and that the courses offered meet the expanding educational needs of the students in our highly Mobile overseas society. As you know. Dodds students regularly Transfer in and out of the stateside school systems. Forty four of the 50 states have raised their credit requirements for graduation from High school. Several of these Stales have passed new subject requirements for graduation additional Days in the school year longer school Days and new requirements for College admissions. Many colleges Independent of legislation also have in creased their admission requirements. Fifteen states have High school graduation requirements in excess of those now required by Dodds.
