European Stars And Stripes (Newspaper) - July 11, 1986, Darmstadt, Hesse Friday july 11, 1966 the stars and stripes Page 25 outdoor adventures Roebuck Hunt was Worth the wait seems you cant be too sure of anything these Days regardless of How Well you plan. I was All set for the Roebuck season. Had my insurance License and game bag limit record Well before opening Day. Then came the Accident at chernobyl. Radiation Levels in Venison delayed the opening of Hunting seasons in most parts of Germany. Some states began to allow Hunting june i others opened june16. These Short delays weren t so bad but when i began final arrangements to Hunt i found Many individual forestry offices were still not harvesting game because of marketing problems. Although the meat was considered Safe Many apprehensive buy ers were refusing to Purchase Venison fearing High radiation Levels. Some forestry authorities have been allowing Hunts provided the Hunter agrees to Purchase All Ven Ison after a successful Hunt. That s not a bad condition but unfortunately there were no stipulations in the District where i usually Hunt there just was t any Hunting Al Lowed there. Needless to say i was disappointed to learn that when i started making plans in late june. So july rolled around and i still t been Hunt ing. My chances seemed to be growing dimmer until Clay Middlecamp Hunting coordinator for the my Mark Swearengen Nich area called to offer help. He was Able to Book a Hunt in an area where i been wanting to Hunt for several years. I finally got to the Field earlier this week. I went to a District near Nieburg an Der Donau. A town 1 re member visiting More than 20 years ago during my first assignment in Germany. I was settled in the hoc Silz High scat by 7 30 . It been raining and the air was Cool. The mosquitoes were some of the biggest i be seen and were out in Force. They were also aggressive and this All reminded me of my younger Days and nights on Salt River in Northeast Missouri. I was Able to make a fast application of repellent otherwise i would have been in trouble. I waited an hour and saw nothing. Ten o clock came. Still nothing. I was about to conclude Hunting was Over for the night because it was almost dark. Suddenly i saw a mint Silhouette of a Deer about 100 meters away. I studied it through my binoculars. It was too dark for a Good Clear an Sprecher identifications i quietly reached into my Rucksack for the Spek Liv spotting scope. With just the binoculars i would have decided not to shoot because i just was t sure whether i a Buck or Doc. The pc Tiv cleared things up. It was a Young spic scr Spike Buck. I Goethe shot off just As darkness closed in. A few More minutes would have been too late. So the season is off to a late and difficult Start but at least i be managed to get in one successful things will get better before the Blatz ii rutting season because once it s past Roebuck arc More difficult to find.
