European Stars And Stripes (Newspaper) - August 31, 1986, Darmstadt, Hesse Sunday August 31, 1986 the stars and stripes Page 23 air Force football Ramstein charges by flyers by Bucky Fox staff writer Wiesbaden Jeff Wilson threw two touchdown passes. Walter Brown had two to catches Clarence Toomir one. Willie Mccray led everyone in Rush ing. Thuman Shelby had three sacks. And the Ramstein rams beat the Wiesbaden flyers 34-0. Nothing new to report As the air Force s Continental sports conference season kicked off saturday. The rams simply keep passing and catching and running and tackling better than anyone. Just like they did while winning Csc titles from 1982 to 85. We re a better football team than last year said Wilson the league s Star quarterback the last two seasons. He completed 7 of 17 passes for 108 Yards before going out with a pulled Groin mus Cle. We were just getting our timing Down said Toomer whose late catches led ram slim to the Safe title last year. He had a game High five receptions for 59 Yards. That s the Best team i be seen of All the teams i saw in the exhibition sea son said Wiesbaden coach Gary Covington. He coached the rams to their 82csc title before returning to Germany this year to try and turn around the Fly ers 2-6 Mark of 85. You d have to believe Covington. His flyers flew nowhere against a Ramstein defense that looked quicker than the one that also opened with a shutout last year. The rams reached Wiesbaden quarterbacks 12 times for 102 Yards in losses. That gave the flyers a net of minus 80 Yards Rushing. Tack on their 80 Yards passing and Wiesbaden gained Zero Yards. Shut out on the Board on in the Book. They kept on our heels All Day said Covington. We could t get Loose. They have such a Quick football team. It s horrible when you can t keep men off Mel Crandell fell victim to most of Ramstein s abuse. He was sacked eight times for 80 Yards in losses. And Here he had just come to Lindsey As after years of dominating the German american league for the Dusseldorf panthers. Welcome to Safe football. Crandell dodged enough rams to Complete 8 of 21 passes for 70 Yards but threw two interceptions. You can t throw the Ball if there s no time said Covington. Did that performance Clinch the Slart is Pototo by Ken George Wiesbaden s Lynn Roberts is tackled by Ramstein end Roddery Walker after a 5-Yard gain. No. 76 is flyer guard James Meyers. Ing quarterback spot for Crandell who replaced Tommy Thomas in the second Quarter said Covington we have two Shelby the rams 6-foot-3, 240-Pound defensive end who had two sacks in that 1985 opener routed Wiesbaden at nearly every turn. His second sack of Crandell produced a safety that gave Ramstein a 16-0 Lead with 1 10 left in the first half. Their linemen were kind of slow. They were backing from the begin Ning said Shelby. But they la be a Good team. It just takes time to get an Offen Sive line Shelby s three sacks did t even Lead the rams. They got four from linebacker Tony Pickering. Pickering who goes 5-11, 180, thought he was a defensive Back in training Camp. But Ramstein s mass of Talent Back there forced him to change positions. The rams other sacks came from end Millian Lewis two tackle Daryl Scott two and linebacker Stan Henderson one. That s the same Henderson who started at fullback the last two years. He still has a Knack for scoring he recovered Ken Taylor s blocked punt in the end zone for a 22-0 Lead late in the third Quarter. This in t better than running the Ball said Henderson moments after beating his head against a locker. But on defense i can let my aggression out a Little Gunnar Lewis the rams new full Back can t Block like Henderson used to but easily outruns him. He gained 54 Yards in nine carries. Mccray the rams old tailback looked As powerful As when he finished second in Csc Rushing last year. He rushed 22 times for 88 Yards. Ramstein totalled 162 Yards Rushing and averaged 3.8 Yards per carry. Coach Bill Schultz wanted More. Gary did a Good Job stopping our running game said Schultz. Our pass ing game is alive and Well. We re Gonna make Money on our passing game. I Don t care How Many they put Back there. Because then Well beat you with Mccray and Gunnar Wilson limped off the Field after wies Baden s 245-Pound tackle Willie Gilbert walloped him. But Wilson himself a big Guy at 215 pounds contended the hit was nothing. It was the Drosback that strained his Groin muscle. Charles Herron replaced Wilson and completed 7 of 18 passes for 55 Yards. Herron went with the sure stuff passes to Toomer and Brown. That s . Toomer now he prefers that to Clarence. And that s James Brown after going by Walter last year. So some Ramstein names have changed. 5 interceptions help sabers clip tigers 25-14. ,. I f ,u., i. The interceptions allowed the sabers to break open what had been a defensive struggle for the first 30 minutes and to negate a formidable Simbach ground game led by David Scwell s 139yards teammate Leonard Abrams added so Rushing Yards for the losers. Span Dahlem opened the scoring with 4 41 left in the first Quarter on a 1-Yard touchdown run by quarterback Ernest Bynum which concluded a 48-Yard drive the sabers were unable to convert the Pat. The action heated Midway through the d Quarte the sabers for 10 Points in less than two minutes. Marty Allen s 32-Yard Field goal put the sabers 9-2 with 8 08 left and at 6 25 Bynum hit Rick Howell with a 26-Yard scoring play. Allen s 1 at kick made it 16-2. The tigers got some of that Back near the end of the Quarter when Jones threw a 14-Yard touchdown pass to William Langley to Cap a 24-Yard scoring drive set by a muffed punt. A try for the two Point conversion failed. Jones y of 19 for 69 Yards to go with his five interceptions struck again Midway through the final Quarter with a 15-Yard to pass to Alex Clark. That capped a 53-Yard Simbach drive but the sabers again stuffed the tigers two Point conversion attempt to preserve their 16-14 Lead. That was As close As the tigers were to gel As two late interceptions by the sabres led to a 16-Vard Allen Field goal with 2 12 left in the game and a i Yard Hopper to run As the clock expired
