The prize was awarded by the world of poetry based in Sacramento Calif. After considerable checking we Learned that Kel lems did indeed win the s500 prize far the poem. Now hear this n today s mail a Reader sen me a copy of an action in Senalle column from the Seattle Post intelligencer by Maribeth Morris. Morris writes that someone at the Posl Imelli Gunc or fell in love with that poem seven years ago. She says in is an old i Indian prayer Fri Hen in memory Ofa fallen tribe member and has been around for several the author was never identified. The prayer was firs published in the now defunct Northwest Indian news. The Seattle Posl was Given permission to reprint it. The Post-1 it Olligene it thought in was Beautiful and printed up s-by-1i Inch copies and sent them to the Public for 40 cents. To Dale they have sent out More than 5.000copies. Action in Seattle got on the phone to the world of poetry in California when a Reader complained that the poem could not be Anonymous if a Man was awarded $500 for having written in. They discovered that they weren t the Only ones who were calling Wilh questions about that poem. We have been deluged Wilh Calls said a world of poetry staffer. Apparently a great Many people around the country were Well acquainted with it they were told that kill cams has been disqualified As the Winner of the pot o Gold world of poetry contest. Maribeth Morris is in a slate of Shock. And Ann Landers is reminded of those Wise words of Abraham Lincoln you can fool some of the people some of the Etc. Dear Ann Landers i am about 10 marry a wonderful considerate Man. We arc both virgins. Our friends tease us a lot about being so inexperienced. I must admit i have wondered what sort of a sex Ual partner Roy will be. My girlfriends Ai work say if you want to know a Man s sexual appetite just watch him satisfy his appetite for food particularly if he s really hungry and it s something he likes a lot 1 watched Roy go after a Steak last night and 1 scared. Is there any truth to his so called lest worried in Wyoming dour . None whatever. Some user it the table nay be lifeless in the bedroom. And vice Vena. New gift Tiki syr Cit letters not much has changed says non smoker How great it is the modern army Wilh its current emphasis on health and fitness. Was glad to know that the army was cracking Down on the smokers within its ranks and that Toon we non smokers would no longer have to endure the foul Carci Nogens imposed upon us by our less intelligent Peers. I was Happy to know that Only certain areas would be open for use by smokers in their deadly pastime. Finally i would be Able to come Home from work with out my wife noting that i smell like cigarette smoke. How naive i was to think thai a policy As Vaguel worded As the current army smoking regulation would be adhered to. In the weeks that have passed since the regulation look effect there has been no noticeable change fro the Lime before other Ihan a Bunch of new signs being posted. It s really ludicrous when the smoking and no smoking signs arc posted less than 10 feet apart thus dividing and gerrymandering our shop into Little free fire no fire zones. Policy has been modified so that individuals Are allowed to smoke at certain desks in order that work might continue unabated. And the policy of designating certain desks is highly arbitrary and ambiguous. T thought the original idea was to gel this wasteful habit out of the work area. Instead All we have done is to create another Federal military Boondoggle. Our current surgeon general. Everett c. Koop has been waging an unparalleled Campaign against this unhealthy practice in an Effort to get americans to realize just what a Wasie the use of tobacco products is. Have we Ever sat Down and thought about it some 390,000people die from smoking related illnesses every year in our country atone. Thai s roughly equivalent to massacring a Village a Day. Whal becomes a further moral outrage to me is that our Federal government subsidizes this senseless trag Edy. When Are we going to get smart so we Force a few Farmers to find Ether Means of income such As grow ing food. In a world where Over half the inhabitants Are in poverty is this such a bad idea it s really lop Badour government and the tobacco Industry arc in the business or reaping profits against the health of our citizenry. I grew up in a tobacco stale and 1 still Don agree Wilh this practice. I m no saying that the Industry should be banned. If people wish to smoke in s their right to do so but i Don t wish to see a mull billion Dollar Industry Robbin the coffers of the Treasury while it robs the lives of american citizens. If we re so willing to Send troops to a foreign land to eradicate one danger to our health Why do we subsidize another on our own soil sorry but i m of the conviction that tobacco is Nei ther for the body nor the belly bul is to be used As an Herb for sick Eattle and when i we someone smoking ail i can think is How can they waste something so precious and fragile As human life sgt. While the intent of the policy is to protect non smokers from the effects of secondhand smoke tame India Ledoil Lead in May be allowing in for own smoking Hab la to influence their implementation a the policy. The Rule is. If non smoker complains lint Snake in Hli or her area is bothersome thai is sufficient Evi Dence that the ventilation is not adequate to isolate secondhand smoke and therefore that area cannot be Des ignited As a smoking area. Additionally any work area which non smokers Are required la enter into far example a supervisor or commander s office or a customer service area ten if it 1 not their Normal work area cannot be designated u a smoking area. I would also like to comment on your concent about All the new signs being posted. The a Saker policy i that of Molann signs Are unnecessary. It is the Ripon i Billy of leaders to make All personnel aware that smoking is prohibited in army buildings unless a sign i present designating an area for smoking. Don t base judgment on looks writer says what is wrong with today s society quite often i hear Don t judge a Book by its cover. Why Don people listen to that when i brought my new Boyfriend Home everybody came Down on me my neighbors and parents. When i first met him i did t notice the six earrings five in the left the fact that he dresses Tacky or looks old for 19. I did t even think about the fact that he s already been divorced. My neighbors said with your looks your build your personality you could do better than do you know Whai i Don t care. He s a very Sweet Guy. Iguess i m going too far into the future since i Don t care what he looks like. All 1 noticed at first was hit great personality. It look my neighbors and friends four weeks 10 Fig ure that out. What is wrong Wilh today s society name and location withheld he likes emphasis on Drunken driving toll i wish to comment about the radio station in de troit i believe counting on a Large billboard the num Ber of murder committed with handguns. Some peo ple in the City reject the idea because they did t want others suffering plastered on a billboard. I remember watching the evening news when i was 8 years old. Every night the news would show America How Many americans were killed during the Day in Vietnam this plastering of suffering changed Public opinion and the shout for an end to the War grew As the numbers grew. Public opinion was the key. Public opinion can be focused on other areas too handgun murders drug abuse and the cause t fight for stopping the Drunken Driver. I would like to see the evening Newi Start counting americans lulled by these murderers the Drunken Drivers in More than 10 years of Vietnam 53,000 Ameri cans died and i m sorry. Every two Yean the Drinken Driver will kill 53,000 americans. I m mad. Come on Public opinion staff sgt. Kenneth p. Cramm Wuerzburg Germany pen pals hwn4cnw to Bess my of m. Of slug .
