It was one or Many reports of heroism emerging from the Friday night disaster that occurred a half mile out of Bel Gium s Zeebrugge Harbor. A survivor said her grandmother Dis appeared while trying to help an invalid in a wheelchair and other passengers passed children through broken windows onto the Hull of the ferry before saving themselves. Truck Driver William Cardwell of Scarva Northern Ireland told the Brit ish news Agency press association he was rapped on an upper deck when he saw he baby rescued. I saw this Chap climbing Over he tables and chairs holding he child by his cd dishes in his clenched Teeth. Clifford Byrne 22, and his Friend an Drew Simons 30, said they rescued a 2 year old girl after he Comdr they were in was flooded and the lights went out. Simons a Mechanic from South Lon Don Laid they were hauling themselves along a Banister As the water level Rose. In a lounge they found a Man standing in deep water holding the girl. He was too cold to move. Cliff and managed to get a hand to the baby and we got it out of the water he said Byrne said rescuers smashed a port Hole and they passed the girl through be fore getting out themselves and King lifted off by helicopter it was not known what happened to he Man who had been holding he child. College student Rebecca Carbley 18,said her grandmother disappeared while trying to help an invalid in a who Elchami r. The boat was going Over a wheel chair suddenly went past with someone in it. My grandmother instinctively put out her hand to Stop it. She was carried with the wheelchair Down the ship and we did t see her again. I Don know if she s alive or dead she said. Emma Smith 28, said she her Hus band. Bob and their 4-year-old son Mike had just Iofi their car when disaster struck. She said a Man pulled her through a broken window but that her husband and son disappeared. I have not seen my son or husband since i Don t know if they arc alive she said.
