European Stars And Stripes (Newspaper) - March 30, 1987, Darmstadt, Hesse Monday March 30, 1967 the stars and stripes Page 23 commentary baseball should Honor too on the 40th anniversary of Jackie Robinson As the major leagues first Black player this baseball season has been dedicated to his memory a decreed by commissioner Peter Ueberroth. On opening Day in each City Jackie Robinson s number,42, will be imprinted on second base his primary. Petition. All Well and Good and Long overdue. But baseball seems to be ignoring the other Early Black players especially Larry Doby who integrated the american league Midway through thai same 1947 season As a Rookie with the Cleveland indians. We have no plans now Rich Levin of the com missioner s office said for any of the other Black baseball is celebrating Jackie Robinion it also should be celebrating the Black players who were his contemporaries. At the All Star game in Oakland Calif on july 14, Larry Doby should be the Honor Ary Captain of the american league team Roy Cam Panella who was Robinson s teammate on the Brooklyn dodgers the honorary Captain of the National league team. In glorifying those who arc first the second soften forgotten. Now the new Jersey nets1 director of Community affairs Larry Doby integrated Al those american league ballparks where Jackie Rob Inson never appeared. And he did it with class an with clout. In his 13 seasons Doby baited .283 with 253home runs. He twice led the league in homers while being swept by the new York giants to the world series. As the american league s first Black player Dob had to endure much of the same prejudice Robinson did in the National. J the Day i joined the indians in Chicago Lou Boudreau lined up All the players Doby Vita saying now referring to the manager and shortstop. One Dave an Ferson by one Lou introduced me to each player. This is Joe Gordon and Gordon put hit hand out. This is Bob Lemon and Lemon put his Hind out. This i Jim Hegan and Hegan put his hand out All the Guys put their hands out All but three. As soon As he could Bill Veeck got rid of those then 23 years old Doby had been signed primarily As a second baseman although he also had played first base shortstop and third base for the Newark eagles in the Black leagues. In the first game of a doubleheader that Day struck out As a Pinch Hitler Doby recalled. Before the second game Boudreau told me to play first base. I did t have my first baseman s Glove. But the first baseman did t want to let me use one of Gordon had to talk him into it. Gordon was great to me. Before games he was the Guy who warm up with me Doby has fond memories of Bill a coach with the indians after having managed the Cincinnati reds. When Lou Boudreau was at shortstop Mckech Nolc was the manager in the dugout Doby said. I did t play much that first year but Mckechnie was always coming Over and pointing out what other players were doing right or wrong. Especially about How to play the Outfield because he knew that s where the indians wanted me to the next season 1948, Doby batted .301 As the enter fielder on a world series Winner in the fourth game against the Boston braves Doby recalls i hit a Home run off Johnny Sain to help Steve Gromick win and in the clubhouse the photographer took a picture of Gromek and me hugging. That picture went All Over the country. I think it was one of the first if not the first of a Blackgum and a White Guy hugging just Happy because they won a Doby remembered another moment a few year Slater after Sain joined the Yankees. First base was open and when i got to the plate Yogi Bern was looking Over at Casey Stengel in the Yankee dugout. Yogi yelled let s put him on but heard Casey yell Back no pitch him up and in Sain pitched to me and i hit a Home by then Doby was established As one of baseball Premier sluggers. But As a Young Black player he remembers other moments one time i Slid Inlo second base and the other team s shortstop spit tobacco juice on me he said. Some Guys in the other dugouts would yell Nigger at me but when i heard some Guys in our dugout Call Joe Dimaggio a Dago after he hit a Home run figured if they can Call the Best player in the league that. I was t going to worry anymore about what iwas Doby who attended Long Island univer sity on a basketball scholarship had grown up in a racially mixed neighbourhood in Paterson . I Learned Early that Good people Are Good people i never thought about color he said. Doby was also the second Black manager in the big leagues hired in 1975 by Bill Recck then the White sox owner. If you think Larry Doby is howling about How baseball management has ignored Blacks imagine How Jackie Robinson would be howling if he were alive. And in a season dedicated to Jackie Robinson baseball is ignoring All the other Blacks of that Era. In a few weeks Doby will be awarded an honorary doctorate in humane letters by Montclair . Stale College. The least baseball can do is remember that Larry Doby also was there 40 years ago.
