Yachtsmen Are never satisfied with the word Ordi nary mortals use there Are six of us aboard with sleeping space for ire anchored in a Little Cove protected from the wind and Waves of open water that is perfect in every detail. The Green Hills Rise sharply from a Short distance behind the Crescent shaped Beach. The Sand is so White and regular there in a Grain thai could no be used in an Hou Jurss. It would attract half the world to crowd onto it on a summer sunday fit were available to everyone. Looking Over the tide of Wyntje it would appear As though 1 could stand on the Sand Al the Bottom. 1 know though thai the water would be Over my head i watched 40 feet of Anchor Chain rattle Down off the Bow before the Anchor grabbed the Bottom. That s How Clear the water is. A the Earth s oceans must once have been ibis will Pardon my Pride in dropping Walter Cron Kite s name. To me he is no a name but a dear Friend of Betsy is around and Betsy is always and 1 have been aboard for five Days and for those of you who Haven t had much of it recently i can report that pleasure wears Well. We have had nothing but Large amounts of pleasure since Wear Rived cd be curious to know How Long a person could take amiable company great weather Good food and drink while surrounded by a refreshing clean Coo Ocean available to be Wum in any moment of the the morning we swim have breakfast at the ample table in the Cabin. With his map his divider and electronic toys enough to Lake the . Navy on worldwide Maneu vers he charts our course for the May be sailing no More than eight or 10 Miles to another pretty Little Anchorage bul Waller leaves nothing to Chance. He plots and plans. Even though we can clearly see every boat for Miles around he turns on his radar screen to identify them As being there electronically As Well As in sight. When we enter a Harbor to Anchor be sends someone to the Bow a a Lookout to make suit it s deep enough even though nine boats have already made it in without founder ing. Once in the Harbor he circles endlessly like a dog looking for a place 10 lie Down before deciding on the Best and the safest place. There is so much homelessness hunger and unhappiness in the world that it is Nice to be reminded thai some people have succeeded in acquiring the Good things the Earth has to offer. If those people did t provide All of us with evidence that a life of luxury is possible we d have nothing to work toward achieving. For those of us who Humble along without much Advance thought it is discouraging to note How successful Walter Cronkite has been in getting where he decides logo whether it is on his boat or in Nis , sailing is not my favorite sport. Ai a Mailer of fact if i were to make a list it would rank i9lh. I prefer croquet on our from Lawn to sailing for one thing it s a lot easier to gel Home from our front Lawn Affer croquet than from a Sailboat that has just made a Long trip in a direction away from Home with the wind at its understand the allure of sailing for the people who love ii though. First i think thai after spending Money on Gas for their cars Alt Winter they like the feeling that when they re sailing the transportation is free. Never mind Fiat some of them pay half a Mil lion Dollare for their sailboats and a Fortune for up keep moving with the wind gives them the pleasant illusion the movement is thing that attracts sailors is the idea of Camp ing out and of making do with what s available. The Sartors put themselves in this somewhat artificially restricted situation and Ihen see if they can survive comfortably in it a Sailor is enjoying much the same Sensa Tion that a Young boy enjoys the first time he is allowed to put up a Small Lent in his backyard and sleep in it i was starting Over with our kids i d make them live for a week every year on a boat with a Small Cabin and two or three compact sleeping compartments. Long on a Small beat with five other people requires discipline inthe use of space. I wish my Mother and father had taken me on a Boal fora few months when i was Young. I could use some of the discipline it requires. Living on a Boal you Leara to bring along Only whal is absolutely required. You leave Home the luxuries like a Complete change of clothes that Are made for appearance Only. Second you put things Bac where hey belong when you be finished with them. There s no such thing As leaving your stuff called gear on a Boal wherever you take it off. There s no hanging shirts on doorknobs or draping jackets Over the backs of Chain. You have your own Liny Compart ment and you hang what needs hanging in goal for the wealthy people who sail the big boats Here is to get aboard As Many of the luxuries they enjoy Al Home As they can. We pulled up next to a Boot and the skipper proudly old us he had a full size Sauna on m enjoying this trip but being a Sailor i m ready to get Home where i can hang my pants on the door Knob throw my shirt on the bed and Roll Over in be instead of being rolled Over. Sailing in this Crystal Clear lukewarm Tea surrounded by a verdant land or Coconut milk and Honey not to mention quite a bit of locally made rum is a wonderful experience but i look Forward to croquet.
