It s a army s emphasis on education discussed what priority docs the army place on education one of the biggest advertising tools used by the army for recruiting is the educational benefits. It has been Tor Many years. On almost every army Post no matter How Small there is an education Center or at least a makeshift classroom where College classes ire held. This All leads up to he Assumption that the army places a very High priority on education. Bui exactly what position on the army s list of priorities docs in hold let 9 look at How education Ranis with two other items on the priority list first we compare education with the army i Mission protecting world Freedom. No question about it the Mission Rales Superior. Next let i compare education to Prat level sports. The logical and apparently obvious precedence would be education with the army s Mission prevailing Over both. In reality however things May not be As the should. With the Bruiy s Mission its number one priority training for that Mission must be part of thai priority. How is it then that a Penon who makes the roster of a Post level sport team a exempt from Field training exercises not just the minor exercises but All exercises ii this a thin in priorities when asking Why these people were exempt i was told that allowing them to play on these learn builds morale. Whose morale while sitting in six inches of mow in the Woods with the temperature at 20 below Zero it does t do my morale a lot of Good to know that these folks Are Back Home in a warm gymnasium having fim playing Ball not that sitting in six inches of Snow in t fun dont get ate wrong. I have nothing against some one with above average physical abilities being afforded the Opportunity to ply his or her talents. How Ever what about these individuals whose abilities arc More menial than physical should t they too be afforded the same Opportunity let s think of the individuals who attend College course hoping to obtain a degree. This is not to say that everyone who attend College courses should be exempt from Field exercises. That would be like exempting everybody who is Active in sport regard less of their abilities. But How about those who Are above average one suggestion might be to Ujie Metthe student who holds a three Point Grade average for two consecutive terms. If his or her average drops below that Point then thai individual would no longer be exempt. What arguments can the army provide to support its stand on this Issue i have already mentioned its argument on morale. Does t going to school an doing Well build the student s morale in might be argued that physical fitness is More important than knowledge. This May be True especially in the army. I believe however thai a person does not have to participate in Post level sports lore main physically fit. On the other hand in order to obtain a College degree one must attend College classes. One can Only Lake so Many Clep tests and correspondence courses for degree credit. What is being said Here is that if we pre going to modify our priorities to accommodate those who have above average abilities Hen we should do so without prejudice. We should allow the individual who wishes to improve his or herself As a person As Well As a Soldier through a College education to do so without the constant mid Lerm interruption of a 10 Day held exercise.
