The general election should have have been on april 7, but on april 2 it was postponed by a circuit judge who said he needed More time to consider a lawsuit claiming improper voting in the primary. Clyde c. Jordan and Charles r. Powell or. Filed the lawsuit claiming that More than 2,000 people had voted improperly. Jordan narrowly lost to the incumbent offi cer in the mayoral race and Powell lost to Charlotte Moore in his bid to be re elected treasurer. In May the judge announced that about 1,215 voters had been ineligible to vote in the democratic primary because they had signed nominating petitions Lor inde pendent candidates. The findings warranted a new Pri Mary for mayor and treasurer the judge ruled. In the meantime Jordan died of lung cancer. But the judge said state Law mandates that Jordan s name remain on the ballot for the new primary and the democratic party said it would pick a replacement candidate if Jordan s name wins. The judge set the new primary for mayor and treasurer for july 14 and the general election for aug. 25. Then officer appealed the ruling and  Illinois fifth District court of appeals ruled that the judge had lacked the authority to postpone the Gener Al election and ordered that it be held by aug. 4. Unfortunately the court has t ruled on whether the february primary was Legal. It could agree with the judge and order a new primary and a new general elec Tion.
