In 1983, negotiators representing the town state Abc and private property owners who had sales impeded because the suit clouded title to the lands reached a settlement. Rut the pact needed congressional approval and the Reagan administration had signalled in would veto the measure because the wampanoag did not have Federal tribal status. The Interior depart ment granted the tribe Federal recognition earlier this year removing that stumbling Block. The measure won final passage in Congress this summer.
