European Stars And Stripes (Newspaper) - November 3, 1987, Darmstadt, Hesse Page 26 the stars and stripes tuesday november 3.1987 sports letters civilian Tennis player feels left out in in editor i am quite frustrated with the army morale sup port system. This year the army has stressed the importance of family fitness within the military Community however civilians dependents have not been fully supported in this Campaign. I had the Opportunity to play in the Mannheim open Tennis tournament on july 17-19. 1987. This tournament was designed to choose four military men and women and four civilian men and women to represent the Mannheim Community in inc 21st support come Tennis tournament. Few women participated in this tournament. When the time name for inc 21st support come civilian tournament. 1 was the Only woman to participate from the Mannheim Community. No military women participated at Alt. I placed second in the 21st support come civilian tournament and was informed that civilians were not sponsored to go to inc Usa eur level Competition. 1 Felt left out to Snyth least. If the expense is inn great to Send eight civilian representatives to Usa eur Competition Why can t the top four civilian finalists be sponsored or Only half the Cost h paid for each participant in instances where military personnel arc not participating Why can t civilians take their place i am a dependent wife who has made numerous contributions to my Community including Volunteer work and monetary donations. I m also employed by the . Government civil service and 1 feel some of my Money goes to morale support directly or indirectly. It is not fair to ignore the thousands of civil ians who help make our Community a belter place to live and work. Will there Ever be a place for civilians in Usa eur level Kathy Owens Mannheim German 1 editor s note Bruce Martin chief of inc Usa eur sports program. Community and family support Agency replies civilians do indeed play a vital role in the United stain army Europe. It b in recognition of this fact thai . Civilian employees and their families an authorized full usage of non welfare and recreation facilities and services with a few exception explained below. A 215-2, chapter 6, state that civilians and family members Are not authorized to participate in the army sports program above be installation level. Usa eur policy generally states thai civilian participation is encouraged when it does not displace soldiers or adversely affect limited Mph resource. Because of resource limitations such As the costs for officials numbers of available courts etc., most sport Competition Miil limit participation to soldier1. Usa eur sport championships serve As a qualifying vehicle for All army and armed form Competition. In Tennis the lop four men s open two Junior veterans two seniors and two women earn automatic spots to return Toconis to represent Usa eur in Alt army Competition. On the other hand Competition is generally open to civilians for those events where resources Are not strained and soldiers Are not displaced. Last year we opened All Usa eur arts and crafts contests photography designer crafts Etc to civilian and family members. In summary on military Community and usar eur contests Are open to civilians whenever possible but for reasons mentioned above we cannot mandate a policy that guarantees civilian participation in at Competition at All Levels. 1 Hope this response will shed some Light on How our programs function and More importantly under score the fact that Usa eur does support its civil Ian employees and does indeed consider them As members of the army family. The overriding consideration however is soldiers thanks for nil memories dear editor the letter is a True and honest testimony from someone who it grateful for inc memories. As i am Only toy to Usa eur for thirty Days i could t believe what my eyes were telling me As i read the stars and stripes. After 12 successful years of existence the Northern Italy football league it now defunct. Like so Many Good things we fair to hold onto this is one. I say this because 11 years ago i knew a Young officer who during his Early boyhood years yearned for the Chance Tolx on the Gridiron but was unable because of late physical maturity. The army and the Darby rangers gave him that Opportunity to fulfil that dream three glorious years 1976-78. Even when there were monetary constraints often resulting in team jerseys not Matching or helmets with or without stripes. A new set of pads of any Type were a welcomed sight often reserved for the key players. It often meant travelling Long hours in the morning to play a game that same afternoon or sleeping on a gym floor the night before because accommodations were not available. Bui who cared it did t matter. What mattered was the team Effort the Community support and most of All the game of football. I know because i was that Young officer. If the brass in Vicenza could share and i am sure All the others who have experienced the nil would agree my feelings and the everlasting memories that were derived from Only a Brief moment in my life through that one Opportunity they would Lake it upon themselves to reconsider that decision. I Salute and Lake my hat off to Doug Umer and the setae sports directors in Vicenza. Now As i watch my son grow up and enjoy the game of foot Ball i can honestly Tell him How it of cts to put on the pads mate a solid tackle or even score a winning touchdown. Thanks Guys for the Opportunity and most of All the memories. Mai. Dill Taylor fort Lee a. Nil owners applauded dear editor i am writing is reference to an article appearing in your paper oct. 19.1987, by George Vecsey entitled strik Breakers arc not record Breakers being stationed in Naples i be Learned to appreciate the entertainment value of professional sports. For american servicemen overseas viewing any form of organized sports on television is a real treat. Due to the recent nil strike we missed a weekend of football. Or. Vecsey Stales that he is disgusted that the records that were broken were broken by strike Breakers and second stringers. Well i for one am disgusted that the original play ers have the nerve to strike at All. It s ridiculous that people who make that much Money and attain the status they do should Sloop to such juvenile tactics. I can sympathize with a Good cause but theirs has no legitimate background. 1 applaud the owners for sticking by the fans and at the very least providing us with some form of entertainment no matter How lacking the teams were. The owners did his because they Felt obligated to the Public. It is apparent to me that the players feel obligated to Only their Pocky books. The interim players May look bad and play even worse but i Tor one like both the enthusiasm and dedication they showed. Or. Vecsey May think that these records need an asterisk but 1 remind him that Gary Hogeboom in his first nil game threw two to passes in one Quarter on National television after the Dallas cowboys starting Quwas knocked out of the game and against inc eventual super bowl Cham pions the Washington redskins. That game was for the pfc championship. It was also the year of the it Rel nil strike. Earl a.
